It is a ferocious civil war and local derby, with Ukraine playing at home on their own unique ground and in some effects Russia is operating and fighting on supply lines and logistic chains that are significantly longer. A US entry directly into a war with Russia like even past involvements creates the problems 1/10 traditional US ratio of the actual combat forces and support, with like any foreign power in Russia, ever longer land supply lines with advance, so in a simple example put US forces into Ukraine to man Patriot missile and surveillance systems around Odessa and Kiev a whole range of supply problems grow.
Once Putin delayed his invasion for months exercising in everlasting exercises and shuffles around and the Ukraine finally developed some coordination and realisation from the US of a likely Russian attack thru Ukraine, the odds were the fairly substantial Ukraine forces might be able to stop them. Ukraine’s land forces are vastly larger than the now small British army. The British army since the tremendous human sacrifice in WW1 has despite a substantial and much debated contribution in WW2. The performance in France in 1940 was dismal. Rommel’s small Africa Corp should have been defeated and round up quickly. Montgomery was a tenth choice plodder. The performance of the British Army in the 21C Blair wars in flawed peacekeeping and peacemaking was a minor and tragic farce, which rather suggests the seriousness and uniformed nature of British comment on Ukraine. In contrast the RAF and RN have an awesome record since 1918, so it would be unwise to take the Russian Army performance as necessarily indicating Russian Army capabilities or the threat and destructive and tactical capabilities still possessed by the Russian Navy and AirForce. The US Navy surface fleet like it’s Russian counterpart has been in freefall decline in warship and submarine numbers and in some areas crew quality. Even with CVNs availability is low due only 3/4 carriers usually being fully worked up The USN cruiser force is superannuated and unsuited for the Med. 4/5 USN SM3 ABM cruisers and destroyers managed to take themselves out of commission due to collision damage, for several years in 2013/5 due to not having competent navigators on deck 24/7. Ultimately the Russian Navy and to some degree the Chinese Navy are submarine forces and they still pise an awesome threat to shipping, warships, bases, ports and cities The assumption of most other authorities has been that any Russian escalation will be at European targets, supply hubs in Poland, Roumania, Bulgaria or waterways outside of Ukraine so a strategy to check Russian escalation within Ukraine, may to a degree be a hypothetical straw man, for the issue maybe that if a Russian tactical nuclear weapon is used outside of Ukraine or Russia or a major US asset sink can a proportional US response be less than nuclear
It may be desperate for Putin, but it needn’t be desperate for Russia if the people have the sense to “remove” him and his so-called “strong men”.

As an American, I am saddened by the invasion of Ukraine, however, as Putin becomes more desperate, he will resort to nuclear weapons. Our only hope in avoiding WW3 is America and NATO staying out of direct confrontation. Once that happens, events will escalate asymmetrically in ways we cannot predict. This war is between Russia and Ukraine. Even if the US discontinued support of Ukraine and gave Russia arms, Russia will still loose. Even if Russia completely overtook Ukraine tomorrow, Russia will still ultimately loose. We need to keep our distance. Our direct involvement will only bolster Putins “Evil west vs. Russia” argument and galvanize ordinary Russians behind him. We need to step back and let Russia deal with it’s own failures from within. NATO inclusion of Ukraine, or NATO/US direct confrontation guarantees WW3.

Russia is not a little over 3 times the size of Ukraine Mr Patraeus. It was before the annexation over 20 times the size of Ukraine. Now it is nearly 25 times the size of Ukraine. Ukraine = 0.9 million sq km. Russia = 17.1 million sq km. I am not sure I would be so confident with Gen Patraeus leading me into battle. Which is probably why he was sacked after the Afghanistan withdrawal.
But let’s disregard that “mistake” for a moment, and have a look at other statistics. How do you think that Ukraine would fare in a war against USA? Wouldn’t last very long, right?

Why do troops withdraw? to save troops when outnumbered in specific areas. When this Ukrainian push is over watch what happens? As Ukraine are sadly destroying their own extra 300k conscripts very quickly by throwing men a weak points along the border, this is working for now but can not be sustained for long with re-reinforcements on their way, all Russia has to do is keep withdrawing and then the bait is set unfortunately! (Ukraine is about to have 400-500k soldiers ‘out of action’ by the end of spring 2023 – to which the west are told they are civilians! for the narrative to keep feeding in weapons on an operation that would of been over by now and life saved).
Gen. David Petraeus is possibly not great at reading into this operation, we unfortunately have to wait and see possibly in the late spring? the Russians have enough fuel and energy to keep soldiers warm and have not yet chosen to take out infrastructure (special military operation) when war strikes then infrastructure will go and the western weapons will not be able to reach the areas where and when needed! This is then been caused by those who choose not to negotiate with Putin!
I hope the Saudi’s and other few countries can get peace talks underway as the USA has a no peace talks agreement at this time and want’s war with both Russia and China due to the ailing dollar backed by debit, bullying, sanctions then weapons.
I would enjoy to be completely in error here as leaders call of peace and find an agreement for ceasefire! But a fake ceasefire to get through winter (as Russia has the overwhelming upper hand in Winter) would have to be knitted with countries other than Europe, UK or USA as these are obviously biased towards war with Russia at the expense of innocent life.
