Satellite images show China’s extensive balloon program based on Hainan Island in the South China Sea, and U.S. officials say they know that is where the Chinese balloon launched before making its way across the Pacific Ocean. The U.S. believes a fleet of Chinese airships and balloons has flown over dozens of countries conducting surveillance from near space.

well. its a brilliant idea.. gota give it to the chinese on this. Launch a fleet of balloons. at that altitude you need jet aircraft to intercept. current small cheaper drones cant go that high. unless your talking about surveillance drones. And a large enough balloon can carry a moderately heavy payload.
They (Beijing university) have built drones the size of a fraction of a grain of rice… They don’t need to go into the stratosphere to deploy those 😂 just release them at ground level and people would think it’s mosquitoes flying around

China have to make calls to FAA. Most international universities have do this; they have to call international FAA. Without it; lt’s almost impossible and dangerous to every planes such as southwest, American Airlines, etc. You name it. Professional pilots know how long it take to turn or steer a plane if they see high attitude balloon? it would be titanic iceberg. It’s very hard to turn. They are not military fighter jets. Military fighter jets can turn sharply but Boeing planes. Not the same turn. They are heavier and bigger. Just imagine having a plane pop high attitude balloon and cover Pilots windshield. Good luck, pilot around with it.
