A federal program providing free meals for more than 50 million students during the pandemic ended at the beginning of the fall semester. Since September, 900 schools have since racked up over $19 million in debt, according to the School Nutrition Association. Families are now struggling to find lunch money as many don’t qualify for free or reduced lunch programs. NBC News’ Zinhe Essamuah speaks with families struggling to find their children’s next meals.

When I was growing up in the 70s free lunch was the only meals we got in a day,that’s why it’s so important that we make free lunch for all regardless of income,coming from a family with an alcoholic father was awful thank god for the meals at school.And it was hot cooked meals schools need to go back to cooking meals.

My family is lucky and grateful that my 3 siblings and I grow up on food stamps. It helped to use them at lunch, but now since we are home school, we get the big load and then anything we have to buy anything throughout the remaining weeks. I don’t how it is everywhere else, but I hope everyone is eating okay.

If you pack their lunch it might be cheaper and better quality at least. Not to mention some schools waste so much food, they force children to take a whole tray of food filled with things they won’t eat instead of letting them choose what they want, and it ends up in the trash. Honestly, baseline is like 3.25 a week for school lunch sandwiches (2.50 if your lucky enough to have a Dollar Tree with bread+bologna (2.50) or jelly+fluff(3.75)). Sure you can figure something out. I loved peanut butter and fluff or jelly sandwiches growing up. If you can’t afford healthy food because of financials, fill up on less healthy options till better days come. They will survive, I did and I assume most did too.
Remember, work/school isn’t really where you need to fill up on food. You can have a lot more cooked at home when you get home. If you a little fancier you can get baby carrots or celery sticks and include those with the sandwiches but it will double the weekly price just about!
Also, I used to wash out and save my individual soda bottles and refill them with the cheap 3 liters bottle dollar tree soda. So I had a drink all week for school for 1 dollar! Maybe people forgot how to be humble and creative.
If you racked up 800 dollars in lunch debt in 5 months, doing this would top out at like 75 dollars. Knowing that, you could now completely kit those lunches out with other things such as chips, a couple cookies, a fruit cup, an apple/orange/banana, candy – and still not come close to 800 dollars in 5 months! Its literally less then a days pay for 5 months of lunches at most minimum wage states.
“Thats not healthy, I am not feeding my kids sugar and carbs and will pile on debt instead” – Well, that iced coffee you got there with 3 shots of hazelnut 9 sugars and 20% cream isn’t healthy ether yet there you are in line at Dunkin or Starbucks.
My late uncle all through school grades had nothing but water and peanut butter sandwiches. Just peanut butter, nothing else in them. Then through the Navy ate a bunch of real good food while working hard and earning it. Then once out of the navy he worked at a few places as an electrician and brought to work peanut butter sandwiches for his entire life, over 40 years, before retiring. He was always thin and fit, and died an old man. Even the year he passed away he walked more in a day willingly then I did in a week.
I’ve never heard Joe Biden speak in his whole term talk about reforming school meals, he’s helping Ukraine with our money ❤️

Irresponsible? I can guarantee *some* might be irresponsible, but for the most part they are broke and don’t have the funds to scrape together for a couple of loaves of bread, some cheap jam (more sugar than fruit) and cheap peanut butter, (more fillers than peanut nutrition) to get their kids through the afternoon. When I was a kid, we always had free lunches so I always thought it was weird that kids would be denied lunch if they couldn’t pay. When I got older I realized it was because we were a title 1 school that provides free lunch for more poor areas. Still, if everyone had free lunches, especially since food is a human necessity, then this wouldn’t be needed. If there’s anything worth our tax dollars, it’s feeding the children in this country.

Here in Canada lunches are never provided. My daughter’s in grade 7 and I have provided her with a lunch every single day of her school career thus far.

There are some schools in Canada that provide lunches for the students, in the less affluent areas.
We need a universal basic income for children. There are too many incapable parents. This would pay for itself over time with increased tax revenue and decreased social spending as the percentage of functional to nonfunctional adults increases as a result of sufficient childhood support. Kids need a lot more rights and protections in the family structure in general.
We need to stop calling ourselves the richest country in the world when we can’t even take care of the most vulnerable. We’re the most greedy country in the world.

That is simply ridiculous. Children need to be properly fed; for some, that lunch they are receiving may be the *only* food they eat that day – how can this be turned into a financial burden for a parent? Maybe start the year sending out a letter requesting *all* student families to pay a little bit, even the one’s who aren’t participating, so the other kids can have some food in their bellies. Or, maybe building vegetable gardens on school property to help offset the expense to feed the children. This literally breaks my heart that children; families cannot afford groceries to feed themselves while others throw away uneaten leftovers.

The harm that is felt by a kid without a lunch can be a lot. There have been children who found ways to make it work but for the majority of young people going without lunch has a much greater and broader scoped impact than just an upset stomach in the afternoon
