Which is it: a Russian aircraft *”dumped fuel on”* OR the aircraft dumped *”fuel **_in front_** of”* the MQ-9 Reaper drone? The DOD spokesman at the press briefing refused to even confirm whether the drone was a “Reaper” or whether it was armed at the time of the alleged interception, when pressed by reporters. Apparently, the “enemy” (Russians) had *already seen* this drone when the Russian jet allegedly “collided” with it; so, the spokesman would not have been “hiding” those pieces of information from the Russians by not answering questions. Rather, the DOD was more than likely hiding that information from the American public. Why? What did the DOD have to hide?

First, why would any details of a mission involving surveillance aircraft be made available to you? Whether it were armed or not? What details should the public is privy to is not the point or context of this conversation, because it’s been determined already. Second, fuel dumping by interceptors would only take place were they about to engage in combat (dropping external tanks), or when they’re mission is complete and they’re about to land, at 5-6,000 feet during landing decent. Being they were over the Black Sea in International Airspace, (12 nm from a coast) there exists no good reason to dump fuel. Especially at the altitude an MQ-9 cruises, 50,000 feet, where it would most likely be while transiting over the Black Sea, at least 12 nm from a coast..

You are trying to be funny, right? I did not [nor any other member of the public] request the U.S. government to tell me anything about the drone; the U.S. government willingly offered the story on its own. If the U.S. government is going to do something like that, then it ought to be _credible_ in doing so; otherwise, what would be the point of making the story “public” in the 1st place?
I am not privy to the exact _manner_ in which the Russian aircraft dumped fuel, precisely because of the _duplicitous_ recounting of events, as I ready highlighted, thereby obfuscating the story. Henceforth, it was not clear whether the jet released fuel in the form of simply dropping an external fuel tank(s) or getting rid of fuel already contained in the aircraft itself. Furthermore, the Russian jet could have dumped fuel under the context you were insinuating, namely, it did so “in anticipation of combat,” OR possibly as a precautionary measure in response to technical difficulties which would have required landing the aircraft as soon as possible without risking an explosion upon impact. Indeed, the U.S. government’s story is that it “did not appear that the Russian jet collided with the drone *on purpose;”* rather, it appeared that the Russian pilot(s) were just _“incompetent.”_ At least, that was the rationale given, unless, of course, that too changes with time.
Going by the _two different_ recounting of what had happened, one might reckon that the “external fuel” [your interpretation] _”landed on”_ the drone, OR that the “external fuel” was dropped _“in front of”_ the drone. No matter how you cut it, the point made in my original comment remains valid.

@Lamin G. The fuel would have had to have dropped in front of the drone to have it land on the drone. If I try to hit a car with a tennis ball from the roof of a building, do you think I wait for the car to be directly under me to drop it or do I drop it before then?

If the Reaper drone was in international airspace why didn’t it have its transponder on? It seems to me that advertising its location would actually serve as a good way to deter accidental or intentional intercepts.

How close to the Russian coast was it, they should show where in the Black Sea the intercept took place, if it was just outside territorial waters which is still pretty close to Russia it could be seen as a provocation just like the ambassador said what if a Russian drone was just off the coast of San Francisco what would the US do? I noticed they showed a map of the Black Sea but not where the intercept took place or where the drone is believed to be in the Black Sea.
