A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has shaken Guayaquil, Ecuador and nearby regions. The disaster left at least 12 dead, according to the president, causing damage to homes and infrastructure in affected areas. NBC News’ Guad Venegas provides more details.

It was horrible, a strong shaking, lights flickering and I thought the building could collapse in any moment. I was in a hotel in downtown Guayaquil
I live somewhere an earthquake we could feel would be considered abnormal and wouldn’t be expected and I’ve never felt a quake and from what I’ve seen, I don’t want to! Feel so bad for those who have to experience the sheer forces of Earth that way! How terrifying it must be!
