A highway dust storm in Illinois turned deadly today as dozens of vehicles crashed on a major highway. Meanwhile, the Mississippi River is cresting, causing flooding in several communities due to rapid snowmelt, according to scientists. NBC News’ Jesse Kirsch has the latest updates.

Cover crops and no-till planting would have prevented this. But then the farmers – who receive welfare subsidies from your tax dollars – would have had to work more than 2 months out of the year.
This is exactly what we need. However, many of the farms are investor owned and they don’t care about the land. As an investment, you would want the highest possible short-term profit margins so that can sell based on those numbers. This makes it profitable to damage the land to get a high number and then sell it to someone else who will be cheated since the land can’t maintain this. You are just seeing what corporate farming does naturally. A farmer who owns the land he is farming would not do this to his own land. Doing this enough times will make the land unfarmable. This farming approach produces a net negative value since this soil lost is more valuable than the yield. It just looks good for the investor when falsely presented as a maintainable result.
Oh I’ve seen this movie before. Bank collapses and dust storms. WW3 is next I guess.

It is not really a repeat. There was approximately 10 feet of topsoil on these fields before the poor farming techniques that led to the dustbowl. My parents’ yard was built on farmland in the 80s and there is only about 2 feat of topsoil before you hit clay if you dig. The dust bowl can happen again, but if so, it will be the last time because we can’t farm again afterwards. There will not be adequate soil. It is critical that people don’t repeat the same mistakes for short-term gains. This wouldn’t happen if farmers farm the land they own instead of being contracted to farm investor’s land because they would care about their own land. They won’t care about somebody else’s land. The dust bowl may repeat even though we know better due to a few non-farmers owning most of the farmland and many of the farmers not owning any land. Something must be done to fix this. It would be painful, but worthwhile to either require people to farm their own land or have a significant tax/removal of farm subsidies on land held by an investor which is farmed by someone else. This would cause investors to sell at a lower price and hopefully, take a loss like they deserve for damaging the land that they are not even connected to. They can’t care about it when it is only there for money in their view and they never even walked on it or looked at it. They are holding it so real farmers can’t afford to own it. They drive up the price by lowing the supply on the market which should have only been for farmers or others that would physically use the land in some way.

This needs to be taken seriously. The top soil lost from the dust bowl didn’t return. Another dust bowl could make the bread basket impossible to farm. I hope that people see this and push for erosion prevention to be required. The farming and land management techniques are already available and well understood to be able to avoid most erosion. If we get another dust bowl and can’t farm this land, it will be the real “Last Great Depression” for us because we won’t recover to lead the world again and many millions would starve across the world since the total number of people would be greater than the food production of the world could sustain. It could potentially lower our civilization level to the pre-enlightenment era that humanity was stuck with for 1000s of years. We need to be serious about protecting that soil.

Here in Davenport while, yes, the downtown is flooded again due to politics, we really are in a drought. I watch time after time all these big storms separate right around us and leave us dry. This flooding is not ours, it is Minnisotas. I believe there is something to the government creating their own weather patterns for their purposes. Chemicals dropped from the sky. We do have the big arsenal here, perhaps that has something to do with the protection from these storms we have received…who can even guess anymore.

What is the warning about?
There are countless views about what God wants, but the warning is supposed to come with your personal opinion of something you claim that God is upset about which is also not related to the event (It should also be something that you otherwise can’t support through logic or examples).
Televangelists claimed many things that God was upset about based on earthquakes, floods, and storms. The same also deny that people can affect the world and deny that God gave us a stewardship responsibility for the Earth that he created (Damaging God’s work on purpose or with full knowledge in a way that causes suffering to your neighbors is an obvious violation of the golden rule). Obviously, this is simple to see as a problem that humans (the farmers) caused by stirring up the dust even though it was not on purpose. I don’t understand how this is God’s judgement or, if it was, how anyone could determine the specific message that God intended by killing some random people in a way that doesn’t appear supernatural in any way.
Is the solution to do something unrelated to farming (that someone claims that God wants) or to promote farming practices that create less dust?

This was caused by nearby plowing, which destroys the soil structure and lets the dust loose when it’s dry and windy. Doesn’t happen with “no-till” farming. Sad…

Im a truck driver and i left palm beach Florida before the tornadoes on sunday. and was driving yesterday through Illinois with strong winds im currently here in IOWA dang ive been lucky.
My town built a 15 mile levy for this exact reason. Each spring was always fun because of the flooding😂 not for the people near the river. One time a family spent a week surrounded by water. Their son caught a 100 pound flat head. Local record as far as anyone knew

We went through days and weeks and months of this when a high roller developer moved dirt to fill in a flood plain and relocated a stream across from our business. Wreckless, careless waste of resources. Developer left in foreclosure. New business that destroyed our business got sold and government funded development helped destroy the most important jobs in the world to me.
They are blind by the dust, but they can’t stop or pull over? People aren’t stubborn and into much of a hurry. It leads to death and destruction.
A fair price for life on the river? Wonder if they feel that way if insurance didn’t help them rebuild their homes. Or are they just so filthy Rich they don’t care?

Why weren’t the farm fields still in a cover crop?
There are more reasons than this behind this particular dust storm, some of which were reported on by state-level news. Summarized, it’s a combination of the southern area of the Great Lakes region having had a very warm, dry April, a severe lack of trees/hedgerows in much of Illinois, the super-high amount of farming per square mile in Illinois, and too many of those farms still practicing old-style tilling (which wrecks earth’s natural means of keeping dust down) instead of no-till farming. You can see a day & night contrast to this by just driving a short distance over to Michigan, where dust storms are basically unheard of, largely due to MI having a massive amount of trees, less farms, and far more native plants between existing farms.
Why don’t people just slow tf down or pull over when they lose visibility???!!!??!?
