As a growing number of companies in the U.S. and Europe are moving toward a four-day workweek, the South Korean government is now proposing raising their working hour’s cap to 69 hours. NBC’s Josh Lederman reports from Seoul on how young Koreans are now pushing back.

#SouthKorea #WorkWeek #Employment
How are people supposed to have children and raise families with these ridiculous work hours? South Korea’s population is on a decline this is obviously an asinine policy. Hours need to be cut back to 40 or less. Employees should have the option to work four 10 hour shifts or two 16 hour shifts.
Modernity is destroying people.
Reject modernity, embrace culture.
Didn’t SK elect some crazy person as their leader recently? Like one of his goals was to raise the work week, but also remove some woman’s rights as well like being allowed to work at all?
thats what they get for voting for misogyny and against womens rights. people need to realize that the patriarchy harms everyone whos not an old man, they just have young men and women pitted against one another to continue squeezing the life out of young people for profits.
I’m in the same boat. So burned out and ready to quit. Only 35 but the idea of working another 30 years like this is too much to bear.
I am saving my money, and I want to move to a really small town, buy a cheap home with a yard and just try to quietly enjoy life and being thrifty. I think I’d be happy and maybe start a online business to make side income or work odd jobs I might like such as a coffee barista or math teacher. Money isn’t that important if you’re not happy. I worked a lot and made good money but I’m not happy and I feel like I’m at the age where I am still alone working and might just die having spent my entire life working like a cog in a machine for others benefit while never pursuing any of my own interests or passions.
You can teach english online to asian students and also learn how to do payroll and bookkeeping and do that at the comfort of your own house.
Look for the book “Your Money or Your Life” at the library, this is the way.
nah. 40 hours is more than enough. Especially since majority of jobs do not pay enough for one parent to stay home these days so unless your very well paid, privileged or both, your gonna pay a daycare to raise your kids. Til they get into grade school where other peoples kids and underpaid teachers will raise them. Sad.
How did the government think this was going to go over with its already overworked citizens? They should be do everything they can to change the overwork culture that is destroying its citizens’ life and the future of the country.
They will end up like Japan. More old people and less kids.
Increase work hours so people have to compute for more is stupid eh.
69 fkn hours?! Lol…F that.
Corporation are extremely toxic in Asia. Families are treated like garbage as corrupt government refuse to bring in standard working hours. Quality of life is a bigger issues in every country. The collusion between government and corporation has ruined millions of families. Politicians don’t work for us. They work for the corrupt corporations.
They should turn to science. A four day work week increases productivity by an astounding amount. Even after cutting hours and keeping salaries the same everywhere it’s been implemented averaged out to a 40% increase in profit overall. There are actually zero cons to a four day work week, only pros. From the janitor to the CEO, everybody wins. It’s mind blowing that so few companies have switched to it.
In Korea, the President, government and business owners see their employees as servants and trash. Money going into their pockets is more important than the life of the people who are working under them.
The topic of the story is incredibly important but the execution is poor. It’s similar in Taiwan. Low pay, long hours in inhumane environments, bad (dictatorial) management, and lots of sitting in a cubicle literally wasting time. Very sad.
top 7 rules in every nation and top 3 rules for life………………….
top 7 rules in every natio nadn top 3 rules for life.
Retired baby boomers, CEOs, CFOs and other management people demanding very loong work weeks when they are benefisciaries of that. NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
I’d better get triple over time pay
This isn’t a conversative or liberal, or which country, issue. Its a global issue. Its toxic to force people to work over 40 hours per week. Heck – even 40 hours per week is insane now given the fact that most people can’t even afford rent and food. You shouldn’t have to work to live. You should live to work. Our society, globally, can’t thrive if we are forcing humans to work hours and hours beyond what they can. This reminds of the story here in the USA where Americans are going back to work even after being retired because SSI isn’t enough.
Really? That was the best person to do the interview with? A kid where his dad owns a successful business? That does not entail the attitude and situation of most. Typical, NBC missing the mark…again.
It shouldnt be so much about whether you work longer, as it should be an efficent way of doing your job
We can only work so many hours a day. .
Unlike an actual 69, this one will not be mutually beneficial..
2:13 He’s pretending to be in chemistry trouble.
I’m use to working 84 hour weeks al.ost 20 years now. It gets old.
Here in the Netherlands they are trying to cut back… 40 hours was normal, but now its 36
3:00 for example, in U.S 40hours..
me who work 70Hours week….
🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂
It’s not really 40 hours for many Americans.
I think the stagnant economy in the recent decades (EU at least), resulted in a ever declining wealth margin. Even if you do work a lot, it still doesn’t mean, you will be able to pay off your house debt earlier than in 20y,… A few decades ago, you could work 5y or 10y and was able to save money, actually quite a lot. Whereas today, costs and value of the money are incomparable and – i think – it’s this factor, that demotivates people to work more.
S.Korean next year: why are young people not making babies anymore? hmmm… I wonder…
Why are we treating college dropout DJs as the ultimate source of social wisdom?
Korean guys don’t wanna get married because of the horribly more burdens on their shoulder – go search for 퐁퐁남
South korea : Largest number of low birth rate and hitting record as the highest country with suicidal rate
Their goverment : i know! This calls for……MORE WORKTIME!!!!
I swear, South Korea is becoming more and more like Japan in terms of the base work culture by the minute.
Low fertility or low birthrate?
I am proud of my country… oh i am sarcastic
Well what government doesn’t want to use and abuse workers
work weeks are 45 hours here so i couldn’t imagine this much haha
Studies have shown that 4 day work weeks are more productive than 5 day work weeks. WHY would they raise the workweek to 69 hours a week, the exact opposite?!? They’ll work themselves to death before they get to use their accumulated “vacation days”. Not to mention, extended work weeks are going to lower birth rates even more. Who’s bright idea was this?!?
Yeah overworking is a problem, but let’s ask a trust fund baby about career progression lol
lmao work life balance mean not getting ahead. the people you admin are not worried having a work life balance. but i do understand how 69 hours a crazy about of time but those are usually people who make a lot of money.
Boo hoo, American military members deploy and work 84+ hours a week. Then if needed Americans in construction or other trades of the like work 72+ hours a week.
The backbone of America works more than you think.
What do you expect from patriarchal work culture
I have never worked 40 hours a week, and I’m from the US: edit–I have worked 60-70 hours a week, capped I think at 72
😂
It’s amazing that working hard builds prosperity…the thing that built the US. Don’t want to tie the feminist movement into how it adds to the issues of the decline of a society. But hey, let’s the globalist agenda keep rocking. It’s turning out well for the other countries that are following getting rid of the ideals of hard work brings prosperity…
Spinning music?
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate the dad respecting his sons decision even though he disagrees. Truly a rare sight to see in todays world.
Then your M IPT. You’re MIT people need to do their job. You need to you shouldn’t have a chair. It’s the easiest pedophile job in the world is a f****** computer
And then we don’t want to have your courtroom over here. Were you already discriminated against a German naughty military member? So we don’t wanna have your that’s? How you. Guys? Did. It? That’s how you get digit white supremacy. You need to take your court room back over closer to South Korea. I need to get all those people involved in your 1G. I Joe courtroom with f****** feather head in his eagle. He guys need to get the f*** away from us his violence
Yeah that’s exactly what I never wanted to have to do with with somebody else and their Christian feelings.
There wouldn’t be any way to be around because nothing ever bad happened to the guy who can only say bad things about other people only say bad things. About other people. As his own covetousness and then says bad things about the same one person that wasn’t born house exactly like a pedophile. Pedophile sit there and. Wait to go to church and. And pedophile go to school and pedophile get the play on the sports. And pedophile smile
People just don’t want to work for 50 years, retire and then “enjoy” their life for 10 years and die.
I work 32 hours a week. I could get more, but i’ve chosen not to. Those 32 hours get’s me just enough to pay all my bills, feed myself and my cats, and have a bit leftover for savings or something nice/fun. The fact that a lot of people are working twice as much as i do gives me secondhand anxiety.
Oh my goodness. 60+ hour work weeks. Inflation makes everything expensive…especially dating, getting married, going on a honeymoon, financing a house, raising kids, saving for retirement, etc. Jeez…why would anyone want to buy their own house or start a family if your job that ensures your financial survival eats up 55% of your waking hours per week. 168 hours/week subtract 8 hours sleep/day for a week gives you 112 waking hours/week. 60 hour work weeks eats up over half of those 112 waking hours/week. My god.
They should be looking to use ai to speed up work, increase pay, and decrease working time. 😀
South Korea’s current President Yoon and his government are extreme IDIOTS. His popularity is only 27%, which is the worst amongst all.
Makes sense in both South Korea and Japan most people live in tiny cramped apartment, have very little disposable income, and have been crushed by insanely depressing and lonely lives. By working them until exhaustion they will simply be too tired to cause unrest. The ruling families in South Korea run nothing more than a modern plantation system but on a national scale.
3:02 “In the united states, its 40 hours” Ya, just lie to the poor guys face. If you want to live in a shack, sure 40 hours. If your middle class its easily 60-70 hours. What shotty reporting.
Really ?
@오승준 Yes really. Plenty of Americans work two or even three jobs. Many of us work way more than 40 hours a week. There are many of us that work over 60 hours a week.
69 …tee he he.
and they have the audacity to question why we don’t have babys
They aren’t actually being productive either. They are just there to show they are… there. Nothing to do with productivity or efficiency.
So much time wasted sitting idly just for workplace clout. Quite pathetic really.
Ya
Then the government wondering why the birthdrate is dropping like crazy…
Bruh, 69 work week is so much, you are working at least 9 hours per week 7 days a week.
Everywhere in the world depending on the industry they offer 3 day weekends. Here in Asia? No weekends 😂
Ngl, I think I have OCD cause of the reason that I am annoyed his PC’s transparent side panel is facing towards the camera instead of him.
I want to mention that life is a journey, not a competition. THis is a dreamworld where we visit and enjoy ourselves.
Put a stop into working 80hrs a week and live the way you want to live. It doens’t mean not to hustle, still hustle. But Rest & meditate as well. FInd that balance.
At this point, nobody needs to work this hard to make a living. THis goes for Koreans & US Citizens (Usonians).
Humans are NOT Robots, AI, machines, SkyNet, none of that. Let the machines take over like they were designed to handle & you go out & enjoy life.
Why bother living when all you do is just work? We are supposed to work to live, not live to work. All we are doing is breeding slave labor at this point. Even 40 hours is too much.
If workers are choosing to work longer hours, I wouldn’t mind raising the cap or eliminating it entirely. But if companies are using the cap to force their employees to work longer hours or face termination, then I would be against it.
They actively sterilising their population. Why can’t their government just think for a moment.
less employee, less people having kids. cruelty all round
Last generation busted their butt to build a successful prosperous society and now the kids want to spend it all on having fun, society will decline and the slackers kids will have to fix it. Still 60 hours is a bit much. 40 seems a solid number.
Work to pay for a nap 😂
Eulogy: ” He was a great man. He banged out reports like no one else could. When no one wanted meaningless work, he stepped up to the plate. He was a loving employee first and foremost.” 😂
SK GOVT: Aah… we have the world’s lowest birthrate… goooood… that means we can make everyone work even longer hours because they have no kids! Make it so!
with a culture of such over-work is there the opportunity to upskill and or study/prepare for a pivot to a new careerpath after you’ve already studied and spent years in ones current career?
Is there the space to pursue other opportunities or new directions at a point when your current professional life is in full swing?
At least in Korea they listen to English media. In Japan it the worse and they don’t listen to any language media beside them.
Lol this guy having the choice of leaving college to pursue his passions under the saftey net of his father being a CEO of a Pharma company and not ruling out “joining” (taking over) his dads business . “…old way not his way” is all that privilege, entitlement and nepotism talking.
68 hours a week? That’s alot but plenty of Americans work that many hours in the US. No big deal.
Work week in the US is not 40 hours……
Yea, the rich get to enjoy their life but the workers have to work then die. Retirement age going up also n cost of living. Working long hours is def not good.
This is crazy ! Normal work hour in Canada is 40 and most government jobs are 35 hours ! ! !
69 😛
Not everyone is working 40 hrs though.
Work to live….not live to work (unless the individual wants to for whatever reason). All work and no play makes for a dull existence in the main.
Nepo baby DJ gonna inherit daddy’s company while everyone works 60 hrs a week and likes it because it’s not 69. Cool story.
This is word-for-word exactly what is happening in Japan too.
Long work hours (but not actually work), low productivity, low birth rate, low salaries, high costs of living, etc.
“Young people are choosing to prioritize their personal life over their work life”
wow, how dare them?
It’s 20 hours of work, and 40 hours of the idiots above wanting you to stay in the office for no reason. Then another 5-10 hours a week drinking with the same morons expecting you to stay in the office. This is also true for Japan. You wonder why your birth rate is declining, well when all you see every day is the almost retiree manager and middle age men/women a few years from retiring, your options are limited.
Literally every Asian country has a government that is a staunch supporter of greedy corporations. It doesn’t matter what ruling party it is at the moment, the government has an undying support for greedy corporations that grind employees to their bones.
THAT is why karosi (death from overwork) is rampant in Asian countries like Japan and Korea.
It is stupid. Wait till you drop dead working long hours and see what happen. I seriously doubt this is what young people want but rather the government.
As a foreigner South Korea is heaven, anyone from a western country knows what I’m talking about. But the work culture for Koreans is awful
Why korea is heaven?
They tried to make it 170 hours per week, but reality didn’t let them 🤧
I work 18 hours in the US, making 6 figures.
Bro said it like America literally has a cap on hours worked “its 40” bruh thats not what the majority of working people are working.
South Korea is heading in the wrong direction
Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just South Korea, working 60+ hours is normal in many industries in the West, no one blinks at a 60-80 hour work week in banking, until they fry themselves at age 35.
Work SMART NOT Harder.
No wonder low birth rate in South Korea.. 😂
Yoon is so out of touch with his time. He thinks he can just force people to work without wlb. Lost in his generation.
Japan has seen the same with a chunk of young people just staying at home with parents who continue to provide for all their needs and wants. No reason to work if Mom & Dad are paying your bills. At least until the parents pass…then the serious problems appear.
