It’s funny when you get culture shock in your own country. I saw this and I thought “Wait, there’s a part of the country where this is on actual evening news?”. In eastern Washington growing up it was just a fact of summer that and some point you’d walk through a swirl and get sand blasted. It never ceases to amaze me just how diverse the “American experience” is!

People always get so weird about dust devils. They happen all the time. No doubt a scary moment for the kid, but basically harmless.

I was playing 1st base in the championship game of our local little league and was warming up the infield before the start on an inning when our 2nd baseman looked at me with disbelief. Suddenly I got hit with a dust devil. Took my baseball cap and flung it across the infield. Felt like getting pushed a couple of times with a lot of wind. It was kind of cool.

I grew up on a farm and my brothers and I would see dust devils often while working in the fields. My brother even manged to trip one. They’re harmless.
The boy who was the catcher was on his knee and couldn’t get up fast enough when the dust devil showed up right on him! The umpire boy did great grabbing him out of dust storm.
A “ToeJam & Earl” moment averted.
