Churchill Downs is suspending races to “examine safety measures” after the deaths of a dozen horses in the last month. The suspension will last roughly one month long. NBC’s Jesse Kirsch reports.

👍👍.I’ve been quite unsure about investing in this current market and at the same time I feel it’s the best time to get started on the market. i was at a seminar and the host spoke about making over $972,000 within 3 Months with a capital of $200,000. i will really appreciate any tips or helpful guide.
@Jane Foster I have made over 1.5 million dollars working with him, withdraw my profit right before the correction and now I’m buying again.
@Bright Wayne While investing during a period of higher inflation appeared daunting at first, I learned to navigate it by consulting with Mr. Steve , who devised a strategy to shift my fixed-income investments that weren’t providing adequate returns to a diverse portfolio that would provide higher returns
Total SCAM
@FD All these damned scammers and spammers are beyond tiresome, as is reporting every last one to an uncaring youtube.
@Terry Wilson 1.5 mil? Yeah, suuurrrre. We believe you. You damned scammers need correction.
follow the money
Follow the insurance payments.
where is Mr Ed ?
Who pays for 12 4 billion dollar horses Hmmmmmmm
Well its very cruel to race the horses on a hot day, thats cruelty. They should race in the cool of the night. They can overheat just like humans.
GOOD ,, THEY NEED TO STOP ABUSING AND USING ANIMAL’S IN DUMB SPORTS
Hummm,, I wonder if the horses had life insurance 🧐
Well these horses die because of what they force them to do. Insurance money or not. I grew up in Lexington KY
@Entrepenumbra what growing up in Lexington has anything to do with the price of tea in China 🤷🏽
Some had multiple policies with different companies.
@Just Me It’s horse country, particularly Thoroughbred country, you rudeness.
@Chris Ti And what does that supposed to mean by it being horse country?? Are you saying horses die all the time and it’s no big deal.🤷🏽
Someone needs to END horse racing!!! The single factor is using animals for money.
End rodeos. There’s far more animal cruelty in a single rodeo than in a season of horse racing.
So you would rather horses be extinct, because not using animals for money makes them useless and there’s not enough places in the wild to sustain them.
Horse racing and bull riding is pointless. They killed those horses.
@nobody special You’re exaggerating. Horses have been around for thousands of years, domesticated as early as 3500 B.C.. I hardly think they will become extinct because a few races get shut down.
@Dave Mathews She pointed out using horses for money. I pointed out that removing that would result in the vast majority becoming glue.
Far too many beautiful animals dyiñg for the pleasure of humans.
You are right Kitty S. They have a right to live as much as humans do. The Amish treat their horses better than race tracks do, at least if it’s to hot, they won’t work their horses till sun goes down, or it’s a cooler day. And the people at the track just want to win money off those poor animals, that’s cruel. I’m with you 100 per cent on your view.
What did you eat today
@Julius Sinischo BS. Amish horses are treated about as well as the Amish women they force to wear those hideous clothes.
When ever you Kraft a medical term involving hoarse s you use the root “equine”.
The words are “craft” not “Kraft”, and “horse” not “hoarse”.
In this story, they were using the term most people are familiar with and it is only horses that are involved here. The term “equine” could be referring to any of the equine species which includes donkeys, burros, and zebras. The story here only applies to horses.
Each time a correction is announced, we will be using our new Minister of Edjukashun.
I’ve said a long time ago utilizing those beautiful animals for pleasure just always felt/looked wrong. RIP to those souls 🐎🤍
Those beautiful animals get treated better than you.
Humans started to become the humans we are familar with because of horse power.
@mccalejk they do get treated better until they aren’t making the owners enough money or they get too old, or get injured .. then they get thrown in a slaughter pen.
@mccalejk After they are finished with them….most go to slaughter and they end up in your dog’s can of food….or worse. That’s how they are rewarded for running their hearts out and making money for the owner. I’m glad their closed and hope they stay that way….so we may make way for the New Earth. A more compassionate one.
@mccalejk Generally speaking, a rich person’s most prized possessions, be they living or inanimate, are treated with far more care and respect than any of us.
This is when uncle Sam checks out the insurance policies on those horses that died😮 this whole thing stinks 😳 ??????
Horrific 12 deaths in a month. Investigation warranted
It’s super normal in racing. It’s been this bad for decades.
i hope this ends horse racing here!
A dozen horses killed in a single month. I guess it’s worth it so that a gang of wealthy, over-privileged pretty people can gather once a year to see them race one another.
@Martine Mikita Generational weath not fairly taxed is what he was referring to.
@Martine Mikita how do you know? Behind every great fortune lies a great crime. I bet that there is something criminal is the reason 12 horses are dead in a months time.🤔
@Martine Mikita and another point I want to make is Nobody becomes very wealthy because they alone worked harder than anyone else. They have workers that do the actual grunt work to help them generate that wealth. And that is the reason why everyone that works 8hrs a day 5 days a week should be paid a liveable wage so they can thrive and not just survive. Wages need to get caught up with the cost of living. Production has gone up, not down, which made corporations spectacular profits. Many of them price gouging under false pretenses of “inflation.” They took advantage of msm manufacturing consent about inflation due to the COVID checks and higher wages. That BS narrative was always a lie and it was finally reported a week ago that certain people like me were telling the facts all along. People need to wake up and start holding all the grifters in this country accountable before it is too late. Time is running out!
@Jennifer Johnson Amen!
They’re only pretty on the outside.
Why would I not be surprised to hear this was either climate or animal rights activists? Nothing they do makes sense, so this is right up their alley.
I would like a comparison number deaths to this case to see the difference. But horse racing is abusive by nature and should be stopped. Dogs too. I’ll never support either.
7 deaths at Santa Anita so far this year and 12 in 2022.
@Skye Alexander The ethics involved in horse racing are limited at best. Doping, physical abuse, & intimidation, are rampant within the “sport”. And we haven’t even discussed the fact that a 2 yr olds body isn’t developed enough to compete in such a brutal sport. And what happens after? Where do those who arent Secretariat’s end up? Care for some steak à cheval?
@Skye Alexander what it once was is irrelevant. And you really trust regulations? 😆 It’s already regulated by the NHA. 2 years ago they passed the horse racing Integrity Act. (The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2020, 15 U.S.C. 3051–3060) It “tasks a self-regulatory nonprofit organization, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (“Authority”), with developing proposed rules on a variety of subjects.” And yet… Here we are today. So tell me again… How well regulations work?
@Skye Alexander 🙄 Huh? 😆 Liberty has nothing to do with regulating the racing industry.
Go wave your political indignation elsewhere, because that reply makes zero sense and fails to strengthen your argument.
@Skye Alexander I guess my years working for various tracks doesn’t count. Gotcha.
Racing horses at 2 years old is unacceptable. The horses aren’t fully developed yet, especially their legs!
Agreed. US thoroughbreds need to be trained differently too IMO.
Add to that breeding for length of leg instead of soundness, because length of leg is statistically linked to winning.
Horse racing is archaic. So much abuse to innocent animals.
Bullriding is worse. Atleast the horses are treated like their worth thousands of dollars
@Skye AlexanderYou just sound like one those democrats that hate America.
@Skye Alexander Horseracing goes back to Europe
@Skye Alexander Horce racing is abusive as its forcing a horse to run at full speed for long distances. Riding is okay, but racing in a competitive manner is abusive
@Jamal Wilburn Pfui. Horse racing began in Central Asia, when one of the first people to ride a horse looked critically at another’s and suggested they race.
Stop this madness. Shame on humans , end this evil sport. Kentucky sucks
Who is angry w/the track, owners or jockeys?
Insurance owners need money
Maybe they OD’d on some bad stuff coming up from the border, you never know.
Good idea, seeing what’s happening for the past few weeks is heartbreaking and unacceptable to the people who deeply loves horses to people at CDI and Churchill Downs. The current system is broken and the industry has yet to do everything that can be done to prevent them. It’s time to impose rule changes and put in the synthetic or tapeta track which is safer surface.
National Rules for Safety and Conduct=Absolutely. However, synthetic track just covers up the underlying cause of the issue IMO. More important questions need to be asked and answered: Racehorses need to be trained, yes, but at what age? … and under what conditions? Use of synthetic tracks may help prevent breakdowns in the short term, but in the long run, I fear they may be contributing to the frailty of the U.S. bred/trained thoroughbred in general. Add in the “century-and-a-half-old” premium placed on racing 2yr olds and 3yr olds in the most prestigious races, and its a recipe for disaster. I wonder if breakdowns would diminish over time if the Kentucky Derby, Triple Crown races, and various qualifiers were restricted to 4 or 5yr olds and older??? Would not a proven, seasoned, battle-hardened, mature champion be better to own, race, and more valuable to breed…? Are there any 12 yr olds that sprint in the Summer Olympics???
What is a “break down” in horse racing context?
@Mary Arney Any injury which stops the horse racing and earning money, which means they euthanize the horse immediately.
So why is Saffie Joseph banned indefinitely with no evidence of doping or wrong doing,i’ll bet they have a lawsuit coming.
Well. If they have evidence of wrong doings then he should be banned
Steroids made them so strong they died.
Horse racing has become a test of chemicals and how they effect a horse or living animal. Anyone that cares about horses or any animal should never endorse this hideous example of animal cruelty
@Skye Alexander It wouldn’t be a network news story if it wasn’t alarming or ‘newsworthy’ for an American audience.
This means that in fact the majority of Americans do not subscribe or support what you mistakenly attributed to a commonly shared cultural-like phenomenon amongst Americans.
The real issue is a lack of awareness or understanding of how capitalist type profit-only driven pursuits work like a parasitic ai where even if human intervention tries to create positive/ethical outcomes- there will be consequences as power/wealth/corporate/win dominance factor plays a role in practically everything in modern western capitalist society.
Some suggest it’s unsustainable…others (most) believe it’s about ‘freedom’. Nevertheless it’s not necessarily a cultural or nationalistic thing but it inadvertently does appear as such seeing Americans have been for decades taught that any hint of preventing insane ‘wins’ or ‘profit/power’ circumstances is evil or communist-tyranny whatever bs.
The opponents that get ‘crushed’ here are unfortunately the horses. In most instances it’s our environment, other countries economies, peoples lives and the ability for the majority of people/society to survive reasonably. That’s my word salad on the matter
Finally!🐎💔🐎💔
Do ya think? Cruel sport.
HORRIFYING FOR THE BEAUTIFUL, INTELLIGENT HORSES EXPLOITED & THROWN AWAY .I AM SICK OF THE CORRUPTION IN THIS ORGANIZATION ..
IN THIS ORDER : OWNERS ,TRAINERS ,VETS … THEY ARE IN IT TOGETHER .WIN AT ALL COST .
Profit at any cost to others.
Pumping the horses full of steroid at young age is making their bones brittle. They should not be racing these horses when they are so young.
What a shame! Shut horse racing down!
Entertainment at the expense of a life should be banned.
BREAKING NEWS over rich people’s horses…. way to go USA
Thank you
Any further comments should be directed at your toilet
I like Jesse’s earnest reporting, knows his content, speaks well…this man gonna go places!
Remember Horses aren’t even Native to the Americas
Just another activity from our past that needs done away with. Right there along with rodeos!
Yes, let’s be done with this bizzare behavior
It’s a wonder more horses don’t die. These people are so abusive to the horses.
It was Ralphie!
FINALLY
Quit horse racing game ,it’s a game not sport,
New era new rules should follow
Sea biscuit. Lady hired jockey that would run a horse so hard it’s heart would explode.
Stop saying horse racing.
It’s thoroughbred racing that is deadly.
The standardbreds don’t have this problem.
It’s all about money, common, seriously, they think people are stupid
Boycott Horseracing!!!!!!
Lived in KY my whole life and I still don’t understand the appeal of horse racing. I truly wish it would be banned
Wanna bet on animals running around a track? Use humans
i’m done with horse racing. its NOT important. horses shouldn’t die so men can race them.
SHUT IT DOWN.
Good animal abuse its cruel and wrong just to make the rich happy
There has to be regulations or a new governing body put in place cause horse deaths are WAY TOO HIGH!
Certain they’ll find a way to blame Trump in 3..2..1
You’re the one who brought up his name.
But since you did, do you recall that within days of becoming president in 2017, Trump’s officials in the US Department of Agriculture announced that they were no longer going to make investigative reports on puppy mills, petting zoos, and itinerant animal circuses, etc., publicly available on the USDA website? Probably not. If anyone wanted to read what abuses were committed at these facilities, they’d have to use the Freedom of Information Act process instead of just looking up the reports on the website. Trump was protecting donors who ran these centers of all too often animal abuse and cruelty.
@GoGreen1977 On the other hand he did sign an animal anti-cruelty act into law that happened to be one of the few bi-partisan pieces that came up to his desk. So I guess there’s a little of give & take there but I appreciate your response.
@barneshomestead1240 I guess someone or some organizations didn’t pay him enough to veto the bill, or it wasn’t worth the bother, or he didn’t pay attention to what he was signing. There’s no way he signed that bill because he cares about animal welfare.
Btw, his Administration also loosened hunting laws, like allowing the use of lead shot, which can indirectly cause lead poisoning of living animals. And Trump often demonstrated he wanted to weaken or eliminate the Endangered Species Act. So I would say he was more about “taking” rather than “giving” when it came to domestic or wild animal welfare.
Has anyone thought to start checking the bone densities of these poor young horses and how much weight they’re carrying? to say nothing about the possibilities of long term genetic inbreeding?
Far too often horses who broke down are bred. WTAF?! I believe in breeding for soundness and temperament. Too many TB breeders seem to believe in nothing but their money.
Finally.
nothing good in the confederacy….south is poison.
It all starts with inflation /infection to the hooves that makes it’s way into the heart and Brain. Plus they are using horses that aren’t fully developed and grown.
Travesty that it took TWELVE horses losing their life for suspension of racing oh but not this weekend. Horrific.😡😡
RIP to all of those horses. I hope this entire “sport” is abolished and put down.
My father worked on the starting gate (the guys who load the horses into the gate to start the race)at Woodbine race track (🇨🇦) and he recalls 5 deaths. In 13 years.
Something stinks.
And I can smell it all the way from here! 😳🤷🏼♀️
Funny how there’s a suspension of the danger for the death of horses yet for the death of gun shooting victims, all they get is”thoughts and prayers” how about putting a pause on the sale of guns.
Horse racing is animal abuse
and today almost every favorite won all the races😂😂😂 They need that public support to reopen soon after.. bunch of criminals
Modern slavery for white people. The dead animals were lucky.
Maybe the fact they were race horses was the cause of death?
Think about it.
Horses died. Makes it sound like they just mysteriously dropped dead…… Actually they were put down. I dont think it’s the specific track. I believe it’s the way they are raced too young and other questionable practices. Churchill Downs just had a really bad coincidence where it hit critical mass…..
What? the sheeple are FINALLY helping the horses? If you want to really help the horses, the humans should leave them alone because they have better families when uninterrupted, than the dumb humans.
Only the US allows the medication of race horses. Only the US has so many deaths. Investigate the trainers: they’re the ones responsible for 99% of the abuse, and ban all medications. Running horses once their legs have fully developed should also be universal – the Belmont for a 3-y-o horse is equivalent to making a 10-y-o child run the Boston Marathon.
Now I’ve heard it all, we can’t figure out how to fund Social Security but have a federally funded horse racing committee?
Horse racing is more profitable than old people.
Too many decades of treating animals and people like money and numbers. Maybe the shame finally got too much for them but I suspect they just realized they might lose money if they didn’t pretend to care.
They need to set an age limit on how old a horse can enter into a race
Horse and dog racing of any kind should be banned. It’s a very cruel sport. When they no good to race anymore they go to the slaughter house. Nothing but a cruel money making game.
Hirse racing should honestly be banned period. Barbaric to say the least.
