Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu has said Beijing seeks dialogue over confrontation with the United States, warning that any conflict between the two nations would bring “unbearable disaster for the world”.
Speaking at Asia’s top security summit, the Shangri-La Dialogue, Li said that the world was big enough for China and the US to grow together.

I think the West should think carefully about the Taiwan question. The United States ratified the one-Chine policy back in the Nixon days. Now we are lining up to break that commitment. Following the Chinese civil war, the Nationals who lost the fight, fled to Taiwan. China did not, or could not invade and defeat the Nationals there, so they let them be. Had it been otherwise, the Chinese would have rolled forward and taken Taiwan back then in the 50’s and the current discussion would be moot. I know there are strategic considerations in play, eg., how will other neighboring countries perceive an apparent abandonment of Taiwan by the west (Vientnam, Indonesia, Malaysia for example) but what might a serious conflict with China (a) be like and (2) lead to. I know Taiwan produces about 70 per cent of all semi conductors and 90 percent of high end (military grade) semi conductors, but wouldn’t Taiwan have (should have) relocated those vital industries off-shore by now? Not saying I’m right. Not going to fight you about it,. Just my thoughts.
