He has lost. Remember that his original goal was to annex all of Ukraine and dismantle its government. At very best, there might be a negotiation where he gets to keep some minimal territory (although even that remains unclear). Even if a deal like that is struck, the question is: at what cost? Russia has lots tens of thousands of troops through the war, at a multiple much higher than the Ukrainian forces.
The biggest problem now, I think, is that Putin’s aides are too scared to tell him the truth. He may be moving forward with a very flawed sense of over-confidence.
