@I.Am.Me! Also, authoritarian regimes throughout history usually come to power through coups or civil wars. The dictators seized power and then quickly passed their laws after coming to power. It wasn’t a gradual process. The laws you cite, like the Defense Production Act, were passed decades ago. So, your idea that the U.S. will gradually become fascist over the course of several centuries via the democratic process is unlikely and isn’t consistent with history.
Anything is possible, though. Costa Rica could annex the U.S. The U.S. could become a monarchy. But just because something is possible doesn’t mean it’s likely.
You can find similarities between anything. You could say I’m similar to a dog because we both have legs. It doesn’t mean anything. Go through, law by law, all the laws the Nazis passed and the laws we have on our books and then tell me how similar our governments are. The laws you named are on the books of most countries in the world. If we’re on the path of fascism, then all countries are. Your examples don’t mean anything. I am unconvinced.

Neither the professor nor myself have called anyone fascist. He said republicans have planted the seeds of fascism. I said Trump republicans are proto-fascist. To people with reading/listening comprehension skills above 5th grade, that’s an important qualifier. If you want to argue a point he made, his claim in this recording is we’re nearing an inflection point where fascism could occur, and republicans have enabled that.
You either don’t have those comprehension skills I mentioned, or you should troll harder. I’d recommend some reading material to you, but … yea … we both know that would be futile.

A better example of a modern Fascist state would be China. They stopped being Communist a long time ago. Opponents of the government are imprisoned, tortured, or killed. Fascists persecute and often kill minorities, as we saw in Nazi Germany with the Holocaust. Authoritarianism is any form of government where a few people run the country. It could be an absolute monarchy or a dictatorship. So Fascist states are authoritarian, but not all authoritarian states are Fascist.

Don’t get me wrong – I see why you guys say this but please don’t ignore that the left is doing the same thing (or at least has some similarities – though manifested differently). It’s hard to tell the water’s getting warmer when you’re in it. I’ve been an independent leaning left my whole life, and see the left going more and more and more left also… Not always in good ways.. Sometimes in extremely blind ways that the right could help correct for, but they’ve cut off all ties to the right.. And also getting into strong egoic reactions to those on the right.. A lot of my friends on the left blanket hate most people on the right and what they represent, without even talking to them. Both sides have gone to extremes, not just republicans.. The country only works together, not if you toss out the other side. Not denying the right has gone a bit off the deep end with Trump, but the left has reacted similarly without noticing because it’s in its own blind spots.
The way I’d put it is – the left knows where we need to go, and the right knows how to get there (or what the challenges will be along the way). Another way to put it is the right holds on to yesterday’s ways and truths, and the left invents new ones for tomorrow. Not every new idea is good, so it needs the critic to control for going down bad paths. If we work together we could have a great future for our country, but if we each think we can do without the other side, we won’t. Working together does not mean blaming the other side for their evils. It means recognizing yours, and theirs, and also recognizing your strengths, and theirs. The left is the heart, and the right is the mind. Mind without heart is evil, heart without mind can be dumb at times. (see our upcoming inflation from printing tons of money for things that sound good at the time) – “We’ll just mint a $1 Trillion Dollar coin” logic is going to punish the poor harder than the rich due to inflation. The rich can make boats of money to protect themselves, the poor suffer hard under higher prices. If the left integrated the right rather than suppress and blanket oppose them, then they’d have seen that.
