A tourist visiting Lahaina with her husband for their anniversary describes being on lockdown at a resort, with no electricity and no hot water, as a result of the Hawaii wildfire. She says that a majority of the resort staff is staying at the hotel due to losing their homes in the wildfires.

EVERYONE BE AFRAID.
Nothing to be afraid of. better yet. be Informed and be wise and don’t be quite so gullible
of what? I don’t get it.

Why?
Everyone be prepared and do what you can to help those affected

There is a reason they are not interviewing the locals…they will tell the difficult truth about how many bodies are everywhere.
@Graham Bibby so far

This is a set up
@Graham Bibby the official count is at 80 now. They are identifying the bodies first.
Yeah seems like that

Laser type weapon. This doesn’t happen naturally. Man made “Major” disaster. The government is to blame. I say do NOT VOTE!
Lol, I doubt it. Not when they have the middle east and Ukraine to test the new toys.
I knew it would and take a few replies before the stupid came out
@MrLivewire1970 .Not when they know Putin would destroy them in the blink of an eye
Away with you and your conspiracy theories.
Fire is older than mankind.
And sometimes stuff just happens
Honestly, how many more people does the media need to interview about where they were, what they were doing, etc? Who cares. The island is destroyed. Stop milking this story for sympathy and rebuild the island.
Why don’t you just stop watching the news?
Maui is NOT destroyed, just one small town that was ill prepared, knowing they have wildfires once in a while. They need to learn to cut the tall dry grass, or relocate the town away from the brush
does not make sense, that is a manMade Fire. The Humidity & Salt is impossible to get a fire going let alone Spread like that! Some kind of flammable chemical is being used to orchestrate a Demo Job & the State is calling it a Wild Fire?!

Very Smart…I’m surprised..most goy are braindead AF and can’t see THROUGH ANYTHING!
Lol why are people nso shocked for? Are yasll blind? Look at how dry that brush is in background behind her!!! Lol didn’t need a huge eimd this spread it. Why is that brush so close to roads and homes? Lol this is the ecsct problem that happens in any dry or oily plant area and Hawaii happens to be both in non winter spring seasons. Lol that town had zero fire breaks. Far from the first wildfire scare it had either. I’m Canada a city called Kelowna ignored its brush problems too until its duburnbs half burned down. Lol they’ll rebuild and itll burn down again within a few decades. If they want plant life there then a art growing things that wimt dry oiut as much and fcol have a quarter mile plus firebreak on other side of highway there. If its really dry then start soaking those plants even if it kills them. To choose near dead shrub over peoples safety will always lead this this result. Lol they still bhasveht cleared the ridges around u of Hawaii which naturally go aflame about every three years.
The place used to have natural waterways all over as well as native plants, but in the name of corporate greed, water and land has been despicably mismanaged. Golf courses are apparently more important to this specie than naturally functioning ecosystems.
It’s the invasive grass brought by ranchers to feed their cows. Neither of which had been on Maui. Combine this tall stalky grass with drought and the county using round up to dry it out, now add 80mph wind with cheap downed power lines. We are third world here.
That is all rearview mirror crap. There is a reason the windshield is bigger than the mirror. You’re being a Karen.
Exactly
Why not interview a local??? Agenda
Plenty of locals have been interviewed. What is your agenda?

I don’t understand the part of people getting trapped in their car and died. If I am in a car with fire all around me and cannot move the car, I would get out and run for my life and try to find a safe place, if not, at least I would have tried.
Some people cannot run or move very quickly at all
There is a fight or freeze response and some people will freeze. It must have been an awful way to die.
hard to believe I know, but watching the fire from 100′ away, probably seems safe, but with 75 mph wind gusts, it is on you at the snap of a finger, and you are surrounded. Did you not notice how thick and black that smoke was? Who could find their way thru that?
The air at ground level could be over 400 degrees. No car or person would last long once they were engulfed. With 80 mph winds, there’s no escape. They’re luck the ocean was right there.
Are you saying, if you were suddenly surrounded by fire, that you would get out and run through the fire? Even though the moment you got out of the car you’d be burned? I mean……I guess its a strategy. Surely some people tried it. I don’t know what the success rate was. ( early videos showed bodies in the street )
How fast that wind blew these flames, I can’t imagine what that must have been like, so little they could do with little escape routes. Horrible..
It’s called Direct Energy Weapons; the government has been invested in weather warfare for some time now to push certain agendas to curtail civil liberties by the process of problem, reaction, solution. I don’t understand why people continue to believe what the media continues to tell them as it pertains to these so-called natural disasters.
They are not natural and are being used by Satan and his angelic and human agencies to bring people from two dialectical systems into one synthesis in order that they are more easily controlled.
Where do you think many of these wealthy families get their resources? It is through the enticement by the god of this age, Satan the accuser, to bring people from many different avenues of life into his false paradigm of the coercive power principle—the idea that in order to survive the strong must subjugate the weak.
Royal Lahaina Resort is paradise. Our airline crew would layover there. Family atmoshpere at the resort. Glad they are doing what they can.
I love the Royal Lahaina Resort. I’ve stayed there a number of times, and…in my opinion…one of my fave places on Mau’i because it’s not one of the megalopolis resorts that are so cold and impersonal.
They’ve had my business in the past, but this gesture to their employees has guaranteed they will have my business in the future.
@le th Me as well. Miss my layovers there. Been 8 years.
Was paradise
@MrLoobuis paradise, because even when Hawaii burns it’s still paradise, when Detroit or Baltimore burn it will never be paradise
It reminds me of nothing so much as Pompeii where the people ran to the water. My heart aches for our beautiful 50th state.
Isn’t that the truth. To watch this in absolute terror and horror from across the ocean here in California is bad enough. Imagine being there and having to witness this in person, as you’re *quite literally* running for life. It’s not like you can outrun wildfire with hurricane-force winds.
The stuff of nightmares…
Wait same will happen to that sin city…will be destroyed into ashes
@Random zonewhat you mean?
California, los Vegas, San Francisco all these city in future same thing will happen
@Random zone Anything is possible
D.E.W. Any questions?!
I have a question? Where did you receive your D.E.W. education? I have another question.
Were you on this Hawaiian island when it happened?
What is that? Their electric utility?
Question…Why are you being ignorant to the facts of this tragedy and insensitive to those involved claiming far fetched conspiracy theories. Not a platform or time for your personal delusions.
@Shawn Lake All the glass in Lahaina MELTED. All the windows in all vehicles, the glass doors in homes… melted. Well, the melting point of glass is almost 3 THOUSAND degrees Fahrenheit… And wild fires do not burn thousands of degrees hot. NO wild fire burns that hot. So my question is…. Are you able to admit that’s a bit odd? Are you able to admit it’s strange that the palm fronds on trees are still standing – yet 6 feet away, the home was burnt to DUST… literally the granite countertops, the porcelain toilets, the glass doors, just melted GONE? Can you admit that’s … curious? Because I’ll tell you what. That land is valuable. It’s ocean front Hawaiian land right near the harbor, and it’s all mostly residential, handed down from family to family… And if I were one of the wealthiest people in the world, and if I were evil, and if I wanted to take that land and do something “better” with it…. I would be OK with a strong laser setting fire to the area, to clear everyone out, and call it a “natural disaster” . .. Now, that land is a fresh bare canvas. Ready to “build back better.” Investors wet dream.
When I read personal delusions I started thinking about castles made of sand slipping into the sea, eventually. That’s a Jimi Hendrix song. @Shawn Lake
mahalo
Another Karen boomer being interviewed…talk to the locals smh
Having worked extensively in Lahaina as a safety inspector, there was no evacuation orders from the fire department that I heard. There needs to be an investigation on this matter. Videos show that people were still in the streets with fire raging right in front of them, and people jumping into the ocean as a LAST DITCH attempt to save themselves.
It is extremely suspicious. Who are you going to blame, God or the devil? @Humans Are Okay
Who sits in a car full of gasoline, with AC on to watch a 🔥, with wind gusts coming right at you? 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Whatever happened to common sense and critical thinking skills? Thinking at the very least?
I get flood alerts whenever it rains. None for fire alerts ever.
Reminiscent of the Paradise Fire. I was there shortly after the fact. I covered this area when I was a reporter for an NBC affiliate, KCPM 24. I saw melter cars, which exceeded the melting temperature of a normal forest fire. I met with a witness who told me the main exit route, Skyway, was deliberately bottlenecked. Also, cars exploding? What the heck?
@Austin Bennettthey weren’t “deliberately” bottlenecked. stop trying to make something out of nothing. You’re not a reporter. No one could get out of Paradise because they couldn’t see through the smoke. It was pitch black. I have family from Paradise, and have been through the LA fires of 2018. Also, cars blow up when they have fuel. Not a big mystery. Use your brain.
Is anyone going to mention the cause of the fire? It’s just like Paradise California, DEW. Why aren’t people getting arrested?
Do you understand the Hawaiian Islands are far across the ocean from Paradise, California?
And they’re ocean islands, never being the same as California.
I love the Royal Lahaina Hotel. Thank you for allowing your employees who’ve lost their homes to stay in your hotel. This all happened so very fast. I live in California, and wildfires are a part of our life, and even I can’t imagine how quickly this turn with those hurricane-force winds. Devastating…
The Hyatt was doing that too, allowing tourist and local refugees to stay there
OMG I WAS THERE!!!
@Gee Brewer Thank you for letting me know. I like to reward businesses that value their employees in the way they value their customers.
BOOHOO POOR TOURIST! 500+ LOCALS HAVE BURNED ALIVE OR DROWNED! THOUSANDS HAVE LOST THEIR HOMES AND TOWN!
Umm 55 people so far. Well under 500.
@Lord Camulos55 confirmed… trust me I have family in Maui who are saying the deaths are staggering in the hundreds, but they can’t confirm identities for obvious reasons
There are still over a thousand missing peopme
Everyone in Hawaii are saying that the media is downplaying the magnitude of this fire. Segments like this are just more proof.
@Lord Camulos medias trying to frame this as “Trouble in Paradise” or “Tourists vacations ruined” as if the hundreds of deaths are a side note to the ruined vacations.
I’m so sad for those people.
WHY IS SHE STILL IN MAUI?!
..there is NO LOCKDOWN!!! ..they are busing tourists out of the hotels and taking them to the airport!!!
..the State officials are asking tourists to leave Maui!!! ..vacate the hotels so they can be utilized by the locals that have been displaced!!!
..the resources that are being donated are for the locals that were affected by the fire!!!
..this lady, her husband and any tourists that have stayed behind to “finish out their vacation” are SELFISH!!!
didn’t she say there is only 20% occupancy there?
The entire west side of Maui, is 100% definitely locked down. Even the North rout is shut down, “for the next 2 months,” officials say. Maybe they took a bus or 2 of tourists out, before they locked it down. Even residents who want to evacuate the area are turned around by the national guard, and told to stay put… in their homes, with the power shut off, everyone’s food is spoiling, there’s no gas, or clean water….
She needs to leave and make room for those who needs it
When you have been through what she just did then you might have something to say on that subject!
Go back to the old school Cold War era engine driven air raid sirens instead of the cell phone messages, that ……failed.
Exactly right!
And weather radios
Hawaii has emergency warning sirens. Why didn’t the sirens go off?
Maui’s warning sirens were not activated as deadly wildfires approached the town of Lahaina, emergency officials said. Three other alert systems were implemented, according to Hawaii Emergency Services Administration.
Agree. Carrier pigeon
She gave her room number out to people for what?? Then said it on national tv?
The hotel was preserving its food as much as possible, so it could feed its remaining guests as long as possible. Some hungry people were not guests so she told them to use her room number so they could get something to eat.
The other option is to leave Maui like the other 80% of guests in that hotel have already done so the hotel isn’t having to put tourists ahead of locals who’ve lost everything.
@jesushouse5237 exactly lm outraged by that
Didn’t know everybody in Hawaii is white. Well that’s all the news will interview so I assumed the natives have all been killed or moved. Oh, ok I’ve never seen that before 🙄, sure thing.
Give me a break! Seriously??? Tourists have a home they are going home to, lets worry about the local Hawaiians who lost everything! 🙏🙏🙏 for ohana from Oahu with aloha ❤️ speak to locals please who have lost everything!
How do dead tourists return to their home?
Its possible to do both. Coverage is overwhelming about the locals, as it should be. And there are locals who are struggling who have not “lost everything.” Should we pretend they don’t exist – you know – because they haven’t lost everything. Ugh. This is the first tourist interview I’ve seen from Lahaina and she seemed like a decent human. Let it be.
Become diverse and hateful.. great strategy.
Locked down and few flights so..
@A E I’m going to be serious as a local that dealth with COVID our islands shut down, it costs us but we took care of our own…tourists are not welcome on our islands, they do not respect our home our island….read the room….
@Julia Wow, ,,sorry but Americans can go where they wish.
Paradise, CA, same thing. People tried to drive out, but fire swept through town so fast, many never had a chance. When fire is moving at 80 mph, nearly sideways….😢
People think their cars can drive through the fires but the air at ground could be over 400 degrees. No vehicle will last long in those temps.
Same thing in CO HURRICANE FORCED WINDS on DECEMBER 30th!! but, we had some warning, dirt roads, sidewalks etc other ways to get out… The SCHOOL DISTRICT bused the elderly out of the nursing homes with the fires all around them. This is SO SO sad!!! I know what it looks like IN PERSON to see your community look like a war zone. To Add in SO many deaths. CO is SAD for you ALL!!!
I’ve not been to the house. I’m homeless and it isn’t fun.
Direct Energy Weapons to make way for 1st Island “2030 Smart City” whom so many residents were smartly resisting! Governor green just met with the UN 2 weeks ago about it and then two weeks later in a lush tropical humid Paradise Paradise is supposed wild party rubs. Not true! If car glass is melting and tires or melting it is a directed-energy weapon from a satellite or an airplane and people have pictures of this right as the Lahaina fire was beginning. Please see a call for an uprising for this
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosover believeth in Him shall not perish but have an everlasting life God loves you
You are talking about history from across the ocean, going back thousands of years in time.
Why not talk about the spirit of your land that God spread across all the waters and land, saying it was the job of mankind to preserve His good earth? Oh, you’re not connected with it, just into your tech.
meh, no elec and no hot water is hip these days. Its off grid, and you can make YT vids about it.
When we were building a hose ourselves , I lived without electric and water until we could afford to install it
I cooked on a propane gas range and hauled water from wherever we could
lol
Why are you news channels interviewing tourist instead of indigenous Hawaiian, whose historical and sacred sites were destroyed. Not Tourists! ,please tourists have always been part of the problem, including diverting water from the former wetland of Lahaina to resort.
Ridiculous comment. Racist too.
As if only racial Hawaiians matter.
And as if no tourists are Hawaiians.
Why are you upset about this video? I’m sure burned out locals have better things to do than stand around waiting to leave the island. And no tourist voted to divert water, that’s only a local move.
You should stop using social media. You’ll save a lot of money and being with humans more will help you grow as an individual. If you don’t, you’ll only be old and complain about not affording new technology.
The news anchor is interviewing tourists, who talk to locals… Is there something wrong with this picture?
No, the news anchor is interviewing someone who was there during the fire. I’m sure locals who have been burned out have more important things to do.
Maybe the locals are too heartbroken to speak just yet
Plus whenever they do, people make fun of them
I have to be careful and polite with my Scottish nature in public. I understand what you’re saying. @Emily Feagin
Talk to the locals not the Hoales
RACIST COMMENT
God don’t like men sniffing butt holes
So they wanted to watch the fire from the air conditioning of their cars. Common sense isn’t too common anymore. Also they live in such a paradise bubble that they didn’t hear about Paradise, California in 2018. Pathetic.
The world we live in 🤡
Orwell’s 1984 and Animal farm
is the West Maui Airport gone totally now? Seems to me if it isn’t they could fly helis or small jets into it with supplies for those resorts and condos north of Lahaina Town. I mean, I remember seeing huge helis loaded with all sorts of supplies going into Thailand after that Xmas Tsunami. If it is gone, they could still clear a spot in a field near where it was to do the same thing.
Such a difference btw how the USA and China have dealt with human suffering.
Such a difference between how the USA and Canada have dealt with human suffering.
And what is that difference that you are noticing??
✨🙏🏼✨🙏🏼😔😢
I was just in Maui in June, it was absolutely beautiful and i plan many more trips to Hawaii. I was all over the island and its just devastating to see paradise destroyed like this. Blows my mind how quickly life can change. Hoping for the best possible outcome for the amazing people of Maui.
The Royal Lahaina is my home away from home twice a year. God bless them and their employees 🙏🌈
Which Royalty is celebrated there?
Democrat run. Why weren’t you prepared!
Is this all you are, a Republican hater?
Republicans are still supporting the lying, treasonous former president. Why are so many Republicans running away from the truth of their fealty to their dear leader!! Fix your own hypocrisy before going off on democrats who are actually getting stuff done!!
7:15 August 2023-people were jumping into the ocean here one family said there was no warning wondering why wth today technology the death toll is coming out: Families must not rely on technology and be prepared for self evacuation and be ready when systems crash:
My parents had their 25th anniversary celebration in 1982:
Respectfully, unclear why this lady and her husband aren’t heading back to California. It would free up a little bit more precious resources for some residents who really need it. Thank you to them for trying to help someone out with food anyway.
Perhaps it’s time to come home, folks –
My sentiments exactly. The hotels need to send all tourists away ASAP and make those rooms, food and supplies available for the locals who need a place to stay.
Locking them in sounds like jackboot lockdown
So they can be on TV talk about the experience like something good thing to share. Smh
Wow. No one is blaming “ Global Worming “?
This firestorm was definitely the kind of event more likely with climate change. In fact it is many of many towns destroyed by explosive fire storms like Paradise, California. There I said it. Happy now?! 😂😅
It’s coming global warming
And follow the SCIENCE
Overcharging tourists always brings bad karma. This should bring the cost down.
that has happened in other wildfires… people incinerated in their cars trying to escape., cars that may look empty now. so very very sad.
This is the same crisis actor who was in the MAGA shooter takedown 😂😂😂
Take your meds sonny. And tell your mom you’re okay even if you aren’t.
Rich white people problems so sad 😢
It’s not wildfires it was done on purpose
No thank you for your delusional conspiracy theory!! You kooks always come up with your crazy ideas, but never, ever with a shred of evidence!!
100%
THE NEW PEARL HARBOR! OBVIOUS DIRECT ENERGY WEAPONRY USED.
I think a study is warranted to determine what makes some people claim a fictional technology like DEW was used to cause a fire like this?! Were you traumatized or neglected as a child? I’m sure there is a rational explanation for your misinformed perspective.
@Michael Deierhoi You were obviously dropped on your head a few times as a kid to be so nimble-minded to the obvious. 😀
Am I the only one who heard “they wanted to watch the fires sitting with the air conditioning on”? Weren’t they trying to escape in their cars?
Welcome to the world we now live in🤡
Ask them to add 2+2 they’ll tell you it equals 11
Not even 22
I thought that was odd as well
Auwe humbug dis kine, no good.
Poor tourist, vacation ruined.
“…they wanted to watch the fires and sit inside their cars with the AC on…” 😳 Ya, genius plan. How’d that work out for them? People, we have to stop “nerfing” this world to the point that people slip further into this delusional state where they’ve lost touch with reality. The real concern is people seeking to flee and no doubt lost their lives due to the fools among us blocking the expedient and safe exit for everyone. Delusional foolishness is not acceptable among our ranks. Never.
Such sad news!
My heart goes out to them.
Fondly remember those, that have been lost!
These types of extreme events are happening multiple times a year!
This is not normal, even if the Naysayer’s say it is!
It’s past time to change, but we still have to mitigate the effects of this Climate Crisis!
Good luck everyone!
Looters? What is left to loot?
Yep. And, she’s believing everything they tell her
You gntubgsg designed mg biggest
Bruh noone cares about the terrorist.
Sad, but ultimately it’s our own fault for messing up nature and causing climate change.
Go home you horrible person! How dare you stay there. You were offered a $17 ticket home two days ago. This lady is what’s wrong with everything!!!
Completely devasting!! Praying for you all from Louisville COLORADO!!
Worried about looters? 🤡 It looks like bombed out Beirut
At least there are some people in the world left with one functioning brain cell. They jumped in the ocean to save their lives
A ‘reply’ to a concern for housing, emergency services, etc., made by a person on YouTube….
Greetings…
I’m sure that in the immediate future that the things you mention will be addressed.
However, must also pay attention to the economic recovery in the area.
As to whether cruise ships will stop there, is up to the cruise industry.
Lahaina is a tender port, which requires little infrastructure to rebuild.
The fishing, snorkeling and whale watching industry also requires little infrastructure.
Those that lost their vessels in the harbor will no doubt be covered by insurance and low interest small business loans, so that part of the local economy can return in a short period of time.
Cruise ship guests sign up for bus excursions to nearby mountains, golf courses beaches as well as many other island attractions that were unaffected by the fire.
Other ports in Maui are not as well suited to cruise ship visits as Lahaina, being somewhat more remote from some of the most popular destinations, not to mention possibility of adverse weather patterns on other parts of the island that preclude tendering guests to shore.
Santa Cruz, California…
… also suffered significant damage in an earthquake thirty years ago though not on the scale of that in Lahaina’s fire.
An historic bank building was reduced to a shell after damage to interior was cleared out.
The first thing done after the quake was to place temporary supports to keep exterior walls intact. The interior was completely rebuilt and, from outside, the old building looks exactly like the original.
Large temporary buildings were quickly erected in parking lots and downtown merchants rented spaces inside for their various businesses.
Lahaina can do something similar to preserve still standing exterior walls of existing structures for possible use in rebuilding.
If the Banyan tree is a total loss then perhaps the park plaza and the old fort grounds can be a place to erect temporary buildings for some of the businesses to rent space inside of. The rest of Lahaina Town can be barricaded off until fire debris can be hauled off and empty lots planted with grass or something presentable pending re-construction.
As indicated in my previous comment, it will take some time to come up with a plan for a new Lahaina Town.
Starting from scratch is a blessing of sorts, since needed infrastructure improvements like sewer, water, gas, electricity, etc., can take advantage of the fact that streets can be dug up without impacting businesses.
There is a definite cruise ship season involving Lahaina that leaves a significant portion of the year to get work done, with just the boat operators needing a road access, with parking, for them to continue their businesses throughout the year.
While in the immediate future housing and basic needs have to be addressed, must also look after the economic present and future of Lahaina.
People need jobs, or must consider moving elsewhere.
Temporary ‘digs’ for restaurants, bars, art studios, gift shops, etc., can allow Lahaina to support a number of cruise ships, though not as many as before the fire, for the foreseeable future once a plan is made and certain designated areas cleaned up.
Stay Well…
Wonder why aren’t she and her husband trying to leave? All visitors are advised to leave so food and other supplies can be given to locals. This is not the time to hang around.
Exactly lm beyond outrage to hear the guests are only ones getting food from the resort
Leave the locals need the resources
Disrespect Mother Nature and you will suffer 😢😢😢
QUEEN LILI’UOKALANI AND THE SPIRITS OF THE ANCESTORS OF HAWAII ARE ANGRY…YOU AMERICANS HAVE STOLE THESE PEOPLE’S LAND….YOU WILL NEVER BE HAPPY HERE UNITL YOU GIVE BACK WHAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU…
Hundreds dead .tell the truth
DEW. Done on purpose. Modern day land-grab, discussed as natural disaster

Why isn’t Nancy going home?? She could let actual Hawaiian residents have her room!
I thought the same!
Maybe that’s why the cars got stuck, one starts exploding and prob spread to others or trapped them there behind one
The government of Hawaii should be held accountable for its incompetence.
The reason they didn’t notify people is that those are in charge are luciferians psychopaths and they’re trying to depopulate and they do not want to save anyone’s life whatsoever
If the resort is “only giving food to tourists to preserve it for them” then maybe you should heed the governors request to leave so you guys don’t get use up valuable resources (like basic food and water) needed to care for those who lost everything and don’t have homes to go back to after their vacation.
I’m hearing the death toll is in the hundreds as well. 😢
The way cars are so powered, I wonder if some just could not get out of their car if power was broken. IT all sounds so frightening. Prayers for all (residents, workers in rescue check, medical folks, organizations to attend to this crisis etc)
D.E.W.
The resort is only giving food to guests????? Guests should be gone why are they taking up the resources from locals leave! That room and food a local needs
D E W
San Francisco…
… was able to rebuild better than ever after a similarly catastrophic fire with significant damage and much loss of life during it’s 1906 earthquake.
It will be a tough grind…
…. but I believe Lahaina will, like the proverbial Phoenix, will rise from ashes to become a better, more vibrant community as well as once again being Maui’s most popular tourist destination.
A start…
That old building that housed a museum still has what appears to be an intact shell.
This historic structure may be among the first to be rebuilt and serve as a central and much visible focal point during the rebuilding of Lahaina.
New buildings that do not have a shell to start from will no doubt have facades built that closely replicate the original buildings.
Unfortunately, modern building codes will mean some businesses may not have interiors with quirky corners, alcoves, odd shaped atriums, stairs, high ceilings etc.
Hopefully each new building will have design elements that will allow tenants to make their establishments unique in some way.
But ….
From the ‘get go’…
… commercial boats still have an intact harbor to tie up in that will continue to allow visitors to fish, see whales and explore island reefs even while reconstruction is taking place.
And busses can continue to line up as cruise ships tender their guests ashore to a likewise easy to restore pier facility.
Just think, though…
Lahaina will now have an opportunity to come up with a redevelopment plan that will not only rebuild Lahaina and its surrounding communities but establish a tourist ‘district’ much better able to accommodate a vital and still growing tourist trade.
Bus parking, taxi and rental car businesses could be relocated a block or two east of ‘downtown’.
Just keeping tour buses and the like off the narrow streets near the water will be a vast improvement.
A ‘New Lahaina’ redevelopment plan would, among other things, include an entirely revamped utility infrastructure.
In the near term…
… while the rest of Lahaina is cordoned off for the rebuilding effort, one or more temporary structures whose interiors can be divided into spaces that can be made available to displaced merchants might be located near the waterfront, perhaps in the area of the old fort and where the banyan tree grew.
These could be very similar to several large temporary structures that were placed in parking lots in Santa Cruz, California, that served businesses whose locations downtown were damaged in the earthquake that occurred there some years ago.
At least one east/west public street access to the harbor area from the main highway should be opened.
Other parts of Lahaina can be made accessible only to residents and those involved in the rebuilding effort.
The downtown areas where construction is ongoing might be hidden behind attractive barriers in a fashion similar to the way Disneyland cordons off similar sites within the park.
Going forward….
The continued growth of the tourism industry on the west coast of Maui, and Lahaina in particular, may be enhanced by taking advantage of funds that will no doubt become available to aid the rebuilding effort.
Now then…
I believe a key to accommodating thousands of tourists, especially during cruise season, is to provide attractive and efficient public transportation in and around the Lahaina ‘tourist district’.
And….
At the same time I feel an opportunity also exists to establish an equally efficient way to move tourists and locals alike up and down the west coast of Maui.
So, it happens that….
… a California firm has made it a mission for the last two decades to engineer, design and build modern trams as well as ‘heritage’ street cars, both of which operate entirely with self contained battery/electric systems that do not require overhead wires or trackside infrastructure to operate.
The heritage styled cars they build may be a perfect match to service the downtown tourist district of Lahaina.
And…
the company’s much faster, modern air conditioned tram cars feature an on-board hydrogen fuel cell that automatically supplements battery power as needed during a days operation.
Both designs utilize computer managed energy management systems that include energy efficient regenerative braking.
The following video shows the heritage style electric powered streetcars that were installed as part of a planned eco-centric community near Austin, Texas, some years ago.

The next video features one of their their modern battery/electric tram vehicles during a recent demonstration held in Santa Cruz, California, using an existing rail line.

Now…
As can be seen, ‘heritage’ cars like the one in Texas running a circuit in downtown Lahaina would be just the ticket.
And especially so so if the loop also provides a connection with a fleet of modern tram cars that would run on new rails laid up and down the existing, mostly intact, rail corridor connecting communities, resorts, beaches and other destinations north and south of Lahaina.
Eco friendly….
The heritage cars run at a leisurely pace all day long on just one overnight charge of their batteries.
The more modern design tram car like the one recently demonstrated in Santa Cruz is capable of speeds in excess of 45 mph between stops in air-conditioned comfort.
The tram vehicle’s batteries are supplemented by an on-board hydrogen fuel cell that allows it to run an entire day with but one late night charge and a tank full of hydrogen obtained from a compact electric powered hydrogen generator unit installed in the ‘car barn’.
These modern tram cars just drip a bit of plain water whenever their roof mounted hydrogen fuel cell systems kick in.
Now then….
….Tourist (and local resident) transportation needs aside…
I truly believe….
… that Lahaina, will survive and, like San Francisco a century ago, will rise, Phoenix like, out of the ashes smelling like a rose…
… no…
… a ‘Lokelani Rose’ !!!
