As wildfires blazed on the island of Maui, some rushed into the ocean to escape the flames. NBC News’ Tom Llamas spoke with two teenagers who spent hours waiting in the water with their mother as the fire burned on land just beyond them.

I thought it an odd question from the reporter, how did you think of running to the ocean. You are on an island, the island is burning, what other option do you have? I understand not having time to make it to the ocean once you make the decision, but how could anybody not think at some point to do that?

All the humans should have hudled together facing away from the fire. At least they had some sort of cloth on their face. I wonder how many drowned. Hours in the water with tides and the pacific being so cold of an ocean seems like a recipe for not surviving. 😢
I think the death toll will be around 800. Maybe double that.
I think it burned hot enough to cremate a lot of the people. They talk about metal in the homes being melted. Aluminum alloys melt just under 900 to just under 1300°f. The lowest threshold for cremation of human remains being the upper end of the melting point for aluminum…. it had a ton of fuel. I think the fire getting to 1500°f is not that far fetched and it burned for at least 2 hours.
I think a lot of people will be missing, never recovered. Entire families are just gone.
It’s not tragic it’s apocalyptic.
But why put these people on camera exposing them and causing them to have to tell you and the world their personal feelings?
Sadly u cant just drive away anywhere far…on a boat maybe but thats an open pacific right there thats scary..

One of the most disgusting things happening on maui are the realty companies contacting and hustling Lahaina fire victims in shelters for them to sell off their properties. Some of these homes still have family remains buried within.
These realty companies are Sick in the head greedy trash, Exploiting victims tragedies.

Can’t imagine how frightening that was, this family helped each other to stay alive.

This was a complete failure of the US Gov to maintain & test quarterly tests of the alert system on the Islands. Politician’s need to stop these ridiculous investigations & concentrate on serving the US Citizens that sent them to DC. They need to do their F**king jobs or quit cause their nonsense that has been going on for the last 30yrs has caused these citizens to perish in these wildfires. The failure of the US Gov to maintain infrastructure as well as emergency alert systems is disgraceful & criminal as the body counts continue to rise in Maui. My heart goes out to all that have been affected by this. I want people held accountable for this failure of the alert systems that did not alert residents across the island

This was a planned fire. Developers have wanted that land for years, now they have it.
Imagine crying in the ocean. Mind you there’s ocean life and sharks too. Mind you even though people live on that island, some couldn’t swim for whatever reasons disabilities, old age etc. This was a death trap. Some people went up in flames while asleep in their houses. Some people incinerated while trying to drive to front street in order to jump in the ocean. Dude imagine that split second of gathering up your family to jump in the ocean. Those survivors are definitely going to have trauma. This was terrible on a man made error causing global warming and terrible on behalf of the island officials late delayed evacuations notices. There could’ve been many lives saved if there was a evacuation order set in place and many lives saved if global warming wasn’t the biggest issue of human life before and after my chapter has gone.

So, they sent the kids home from school, didn’t tell the parents, didn’t sound the alarm system, didn’t turn off the power when they knew it was causing the fires. Then the Lahaina police blocked or barricaded the people from leaving. Then come to find out the only way to redevelopment that lahaina property that burnt legally was in case of natural disaster (how convenient). Now the insurance companies are refusing to pay out because of violations. But on the bright side, Bidens giving everyone $700.
IMHO, It is quite the ‘coincidence’ that developers are now attempting to purchase the land that the burned-out houses once stood on already and they’re in a quite a rush to do so as well. To me, the sudden onset of fires ‘mysteriously’ starting all makes perfect sense now. In fact, if I were a betting man, I’d bet that those fires were started for the sole purpose of making money via a land grab scheme. Perhaps someone should begin an investigation into that and check the bank accounts of these ‘developers’ to see who made recent deposits into their business accounts. And while you are at it, check out any video surveillance of the public businesses and personal homeowners. Have the fire department do some in-depth arson investigations. And if I were the government of the ‘blue’ State of Hawaii, I’d make it public and I would do so fast before the news and the general public begin to smell a rat! Follow the money; Find the corruption; Get the answers; Report the results!#
