West promised Russia investments and no movement of NATO membership to East close to Russia. NATO added pretty much all Eastern European countries bordering Russia broke promise 6 times and big investment opportunity West promised never came to Russia making Russian people suffer. Putin wasn’t viewed as power hungry person like now. Breaking promises from West likely made him rethink about his policy toward West. Putin isn’t also pro China either.
