The Dominican Republic has closed its border with Haiti because Haitian farmers are building a canal from a shared river.
On Sunday, the country’s defence and industry ministers visited the border town of Dajabon.

Where is this man’s proof that the Haitian canal would be ”diverting the course of the river”? This is BS. The canal that Haitians are building is small and is meant to irrigate crops. The Dominican republic already has several canals, aqueducts and dams on their side of the river. Haitians are constructing their first one and Dominicans want to bark. IF the DR truly felt that the river is being strained, then perhaps they should look to their 11 works as a potential culprit because there are two countries on the island and the aptly named Massacre River is not the exclusive property of the DR. The second paragraph of article 10 of the 1929 treaty stipulates and I quote ”This provision may not be interpreted in such a way as to deprive any of the two States of the right to use in a fair and equitable manner, within the limits of their respective territories, of the said rivers and other watercourses for watering the land and other agricultural and industrial endeavors”. Also Haiti consulted with the DR in May 2021 over this canal and the Dominican government recognized and conceded that it did NOT divert the Massacre River. Abinader is not being truthful and has ulterior motives. This is not about the canal.

The Dominican president is using a play on Dominicans hatred for Haitians in order to get re-elected. This is similar to what trump did to secure the white vote. And Dominicans have such a fundamental burning hatred for Haitians that they are not able to see this. The president initially agreed to the canal back in 2021, it doesn’t divert the river.
To the Dominicans reading this, this is what’s called divide and conquer, congratulations you are being played by your president.

The 1929 treaty signed by both countries gave them equal rights to use river. Dominican Republic already has 10 canals and 1 or 2 aqueducts on the river. This is the first time the Haitians are using it. We have many more canals to match their number. There’s a minority of wealthy, racist Dominicans who always push anti Haitians sentiment to manipulate the majority in their own benefits.
The people of Haiti are behind the canal, not the gangs. If you want to talk about gangs, the current Haitian government is the real gangs. They were imposed by force to the Haitian people after the assassination of late president Jovenel Moise. They are backed by the core group (USA, France, Canada embassies). The assassins who killed our president are in power. The whole Haiti don’t want them. But the coregroup keep him in power so that they can steal Haiti natural resources. This is not different from what France is currently doing in Africa. USA is currently doing the same.
The information of the 11 canals came from Claude Joseph. He never mentioned the 11 canals are on transboundary waters of the Dajabon river. The key to understand the treaty is the word “transboundary waters”. There are not 11 canals in the transboundary waters of the Dajabon River. Furthermore, the documents provided to the Dominican government by Haiti state that the canal will require a water flow of 1.5 m³ per sec and then work its way up to 3 m³ per sec. Due to climate change and deforestation, the Dajabon river is flowing at 1 – 1.5 m³ per sec. It only reaches more than 3 m³ per sec when a storm or hurricane is impacting the area. This is the reason why Dominican authorities are against it. The canal will absorb all the water in the river. We have more than 350 Haitian and Dominican farmers down the river who will not have water to farm more than 24k acres of land.
The smart move would be to discuss the issue and come up with a solution that will benefit both countries, not just one side. Ex: a shared dam like the one US and Mexico have on “Rio Grande”. Close to 2 decades ago, the Dominican government suggested 3 shared dams, one on the Dajabon river, one on the Artibonite river, and one on the Pedernales river. DR offered to cover cost of design and split construction cost. The Haitian government never responded back to the Dominican government.

We share the land where the water flows and we have rivers that intersects with that river so we have the right to use water from the massacre river as well.
Dominicans have more to lose, we import products from them or over 3 billion dollars, which has the same impact of 10 billion dollars of money that’s already into their economy considering that foreign income helps your economic grow faster.
Those products are so bad that they don’t even meet international standards, they are low quality products that other countries wouldn’t accept.
They also get money from visas which we have to pay an additional 20 dollars for every month other than the the 400 and sometimes even 5 or 6 hundred dollars that we pay just so they can give us that visa.
They benefit from the haitian migration because haitians citizens work for a lower wage than dominicans and they don’t gibe them any other benefits such as health insurance, ect.
Plus they make money from haitian students that are going to college their, paying tuition fees, buying food, paying rent, electricity, water, gas, ect.

Haitians are building a project that will divert water flow from the main river which is the problem . This will damage the projects on the DR side and the environment. Dominicans are spreading propaganda about the Haitian canal. The canal started years ago. Its construction was interrupted but now it is advancing again. Technical information about this canal was shared with the DR and accepted by the DR in 2021.The DR is 100% in the wrong and interfering with Haitians getting their fair share of the river in violation of the 1929 treaty and international law. The Dajabon river is 55 kilometers long. Only 9 kilometers of the 55 kilometers are considered transboundary waters.

Please do a better job at reporting your stories. Clearly, you guys didn’t take much time to investigate this story before you put up this BS. The project of this canal actually started in 1998. The sole purpose of the canal is to help regulate flooding and to irrigate water from marinaroux Plain. The Haitian support for this canal is not just because they’re happy that the Dominican republic government doesn’t like it. It’s very much needed and will help Haiti as a whole. Just like now, the Dominican republic government back, then also was opposed to it, and tried to bully and use militant tactics to discourage Haiti from building it. They also did a full investigation to find out if this canal will alter the flow of the river, or affect the ecosystem. The investigation found that it would not do either of those things. The crazy thing is the Dominican republic has 11 canals on this very same water system, and they found that several of them do affect the ecosystem and affect the flow of the river. Their canals affect the water downstream for the Haitian. They don’t care because it’s not affecting their own country. If they were actually worried about the environment or the ecosystems, they would fix their own canals that do pose a threat. What they are really worried/mad about is that Haitian farmers will not have to work as they’re cheap labor in Dominican Republic since they will now be able to farm on their own land in Haiti.
