In an interview with Al Jazeera a day after visiting southern Gaza, Catherine Russell said getting fuel inside the besieged territory “is absolutely critical”.
“I visited the hospital in Khan Younis and there the incubators are working … but of course, the doctors are planning to think about what will happen if they no longer have the electricity or the generators to fuel them,” she said.
“It’s obviously a huge concern, and I think the answer to that is we need to get more fuel into Gaza so that we can power not just these but other important things like the water treatment centres,” Russell added.
“We also need fuel for our vehicles so that we and other humanitarian operators can move around to provide services to people.”

UNICEF, just like the Red Cross & other aid programs, has to maintain the apperance of neutrality in conflicts. The moment these organizations take sides is the moment the other side stops working with them. This is not the first conflict they have had to deal with. In order to be allowed to visit POWs, they must remain neutral. In order to be able to go in and independently verify whether or not a group is using a hospital as a base of operations, they must remain neutral. So many people are criticizing the guest for not calling out Isreal but she cannot if UNICEF & the U.N. want to continue working with Isreal to get aid in.Getting the aid in and maintaining open communications with both sides is more important than her naming Isreal.
