‘OpenAI and Microsoft are very, very close partners,’ analyst says

Microsoft (MSFT) shares rose amid drama at AI partner OpenAI, after MSFT offered jobs to OpenAI staff following CEO Sam Altman’s swift firing and rehiring. Piper Sandler Analyst Brent Bracelin says despite tensions, Microsoft retains strong AI footing with Azure, ChatGPT integration and its OpenAI-powered Copilot.
Bracelin says establishing OpenAI’s governance post the leadership shakeup is now imperative. He argues Microsoft rightly lent Altman support, though the episode exposed Microsoft’s lack of control in the company despite being a major shareholder.
By hiring Altman temporarily and reaffirming OpenAI ties, Bracelin speculates Microsoft may gain an OpenAI board seat. Still, OpenAI’s internal volatility spotlights the need for both clarity around decision-making and stabilizing the partnership.
