I completely agree. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a false narrative, as much as it’s just an misunderstanding of the difference between what an ota update is and an actual recall. Most car manufacturers in the past would have needed to recall vehicles to fix a problem like this, but newer vehicles can get these software updates. Tesla is at the forefront of this kind of updating feature, and as long as it’s not firmware or hardware, the cars don’t need to go back to the dealerships/manufacturers. I also agree with you that these people were for sure not using their auto pilot features correctly. Tesla never should have called it auto pilot. They should call it like vehicle assisted driving or computer assisted driving, something along those lines. The auto pilot portion of the name provides a false sense of security that the car is driving fully autonomously without any driver intervention necessary. Even the fully automated system isn’t supposed to be completely hands free. Even though it may be one day, hands on the steering wheel will probably always be required. If they had had their hands on the wheels this stuff wouldn’t have happened or would have been far less likely. Regardless it’s still the drivers negligence, just like in most other accidents.

The epitaph on Tesla, if written, will probably say that their concepts were extremely advanced, but the technology couldn’t meet the promises. Same with their robot….watch, it’s an awesome concept until you fully consider the safety implications of all possible human/robotic interface scenarios.

Taking your car into the dealers because your air bag will shoot metal shards when deployed is a recall. Sending an OTA software update is exactly that. A software update. Just report and stop exaggerating.
This is pre-pandemic news. Tesla owner here. Autopilot is also known as Lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. It behaves exactly the same! You need to pay attention and take over controls if you have to. It is in the Tesla Manual, all over the internet. If you get into an accident with this feature, you were just like any other distracted driver not paying attention. FSD or Full Self Driving is entirely different.
Yeah its kinda ridiculous. I mean some of it is due to Elon’s ambitious promises, but people will react to the news about this as if this is why Tesla is awful, when in reality they are trying to innovate with their cars. Many will argue this is why LiDAR is important to have, and while I agree to a degree, it also makes sense that Elon doesn’t want it due to there being truth in when he said its too expensive to justify with the goals of Tesla being more affordable. Again, people need to stop treating Autopilot the way they do.

Somebody asked “Why don’t you try using auto pilot in the city?” The following was my list of reasons why:
– I ain’t stupid.
– It still said “beta” version, meaning “it’s not done yet”
– The car’s sight visual display was obviously lagging by seconds than what you could see with your own eyes. Red flag.
– real city life has lots of different details, like potholes and random ppl walking into traffic unexpectedly. Did not trust that the computer had all logic programmed yet.
– it break golden rule of keeping eyes on the road. Even if system was perfect, sometimes old ways shouldn’t be forgotten.
– Another Golden Rule is: “Don’t play in traffic.” All this “testing” Telsa is doing is understandable for open source way of growing the software, but it is still has a type of toy-like appeal to it that can make people think Auto Pilot feature is something to “play around” with. Its not the same as tryi g to get good at using a remote control from safety of couch. Driving Tesla is more like operating heavy machinery, so this incomplete beginning phase shouldn’t be though of as fun and games.
– Lastly, I knew there were most likely bugs that still needed to be sorted out, and this could obviously be done by others, not me. I didn’t want to be a human guinea pig in Tesla secretly obvious testing phase.
Keep your eyes on the road. Stay in control of your vehicle. Duh.
TESLA FSD v11 can make BLIND left turns and Drive on city streets NO PROBLEM.
FSD v11 can even Drive SACRAMENTO to Los Angeles w/ ZERO interventions & take over.
Autopilot is cruise control with lane centering for the highway. Full self driving navigates and takes turns etc. on highway and streets.

Driving with auto pilots driver looses the senses after 15 min max. And when situation pops out driver is not able to react fast and adequately. Cause ur body is in relax mode.I tested my self cruise control two times after that I never switched that thing on cause I noticed where it will end. I want the car to do what I want not the other way around…it’s up to me to decide when and where not Elon.

A huge issue that is fixed overnight with no action needed by the owner. What a recall. How stupid are people? Do you think airline pilots just open up a book when they turn the autopilot on? No, they continually monitor all systems to make sure the autopilot is doing what they told it to. These crashes are 100% the fault the drivers. Always will be no matter how much automation you jam in a car. You are the operator, you are responsible. Period.

I have FSD since inception. It very good, but not perfect yet. I’m always attentive and responsible and disengage when need to. Autonomy has already been solved it is about being smooth. Within 2yrs the world is going to witness profound change for the better. Have you seen the accidents on Toronto highways. Everyday 3-4 accidents caused by bozo’s who can’t drive. If they had FSD no accidents would occur on our highways. people stuck in traffic every day, 3-4 times a day.
