Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom brought in a disappointing $40 million at the box office this four-day holiday weekend. Comscore Sr. Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian joins Yahoo Finance to discuss the state of the box office.
“”We’ve had a very interesting year at the box office. Maybe the most unusual we’ve ever seen,”” Dergarabedian says. With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and other superhero films recently underperforming at the box office, “”it really has the industry rethinking, what is it that audiences want?””
“”Great time to be a moviegoer. Little bit tougher for the theaters right now. But I think January we’ll see a lot of these movies that are opening now, we’ll find out what their ultimate performance is cause it’s a traffic jam out there with all these movies in this… holiday marketplace,”” Dergarabedian adds.

What about bollywood (indian movies) box office they are also one of the highest grossers on comscore? Why don’t you include them?
Let me help the studios. Make movies with good/better stories and stop relying on the crutch that is VFX.
Audiences didn’t want Amber Heard, they don’t want to invest money in characters that won’t exist (new DCU), they want quality and real fan service… this should have gone straight to streaming or charge $20 for steaming rental on max
Audiences don’t want woke regurgitated remakes and constant sequels. They want Hollywood to start taking chances again and actually being edgy. Give us something new! Don’t remake the Little Mermaid as black and pretend it’s edgy and original…it’s a Hans Christian Andersen story, don’t Africans or Jamaicans or Haitians have any stories to tell? Can’t they make an original tale and teach us something about actual ethnic history?🙄
How was Aquaman woke??
Exactly. I used to rent two or three titles a week. Now I rent one or two a year. No interest in paying for leftist political propaganda.
Stop being so woke ..
Two people going to the movies easily can cost forty dollars. So now instead of going to very movie one wants to see, people pick and choose and wait for the other movies they want to see go to a streaming service.
Warner has always sucked at superhero movies, always.
Lot of bitching and winging in the comments from snowflakes. 😂
1. Wallets are tight. Have y’all heard about the cost of living these days?
2. How many remakes and sequels is Hollywood going to inundate us with?
3. In general, we don’t go to see superhero movies to be preached to. We want a good storyline, good acting, good action and to at least be believable. No one believes a 100 lbs woman can throw a 250 lbs man across the room.
4. Make men great again. We are tired of seeing men depicted as incompetent, bumbling idiots, and fodder for women to make fun of.
Mario, Freddy’s, Godzilla -1, Heron and other unconventional movies seemed to attract younger millennials and gen z. Superheroes was more like a gen x, old millennial trend. I don’t buy the “bad movie fatigue” argument because bad movies don’t fail when the demand is high. Try to defend the success of Suicide Squad 2016
The film’s tagline on the side of a bus I saw was “The Tide is Turning”
Nice little subliminal programming 🪸
Recently I read Plato Republic, Aristotle Politics and Aristotle Ethics. Takes 2 weeks to read a good book that costs $8.00
👍I was at a retirement seminar and the speaker spoke on how he quit his job after he made well over $950,000 PROFIT within 3months he invested $120,000. I just need creative ideas to afford my retirement
Another woke movie failure. No one is surprised.
They still had her in it. What did they expect. Management’s not listening to the customers.
Go woke go broke
I don’t care if Amber is in the film. People make that too big of a deal in my opinion. The problem is the average cost of living and not having extra to go to the movies. What do they expect? We’re not all the elite and sitting in a yacht while we decide what we want to do.
It is a FLOP!!! 😂
