Transcripts of air traffic control instructions before the deadly plane collision on a runway in Tokyo appear to confirm that the passenger plane was cleared to land and that the smaller Coast Guard plane did not have permission to take off. NBC News’ Janis Mackey Frayer reports.

Sad for the people of Japan ❤ rough start to the year
Hi NBC News, please refrain sharing information that does not match the reality. It was mentioned at minute 01:06 that all passengers and crew evacuated the aircraft in less than 90 seconds. That is absolutely untrue. The 90 seconds is a deadline at the certification stage for aircraft to demonstrate that with half of the slides all pax and crew can evacuate. The 90 seconds mentioned int his video probably was carefully suggested and clearly highlighted for many “Airbus and JAL reasons”, but pax and crew took several minutes to evacuate and it was done through 3 slides out of 10. The entire crew and amazing pax all did a great job anyway. The 90 seconds at the certification stage does not mean that the reality has to be 90 seconds or below otherwise Airbus/JAL look bad. There is much news to share on this case and go for it. Nevertheless, entering the 90 seconds scenario, that does not even match the reality, was quite unnecessary. I believe I have been quite diplomatic and sticking to the facts. Of course, feel free to delete this comment if you deem it necessary.

You fail to understand that if the evacuation took more than 90 seconds, then again it is good news for Airbus for making an aircraft so resilient that it withstood a Collison maintained not only the fuselage intact BUT the direction of the plane also forward, long enough for more than the 90 seconds window!! 😂😉
Your reply is a non sense. It took 8 minutes to evacuate and no body got hurt. Great job by every one. Since I have been 37 years in this industry and I know every single piece of it, I know perfectly why the news mentions insistently the “90 seconds statement” that, again, it is a non-sense because no one outside our industry knows what is the real meaning of the 90 seconds “at the certification stage”. Like you, obviously, do not understand such 90 seconds meaning. Hence, I wrote clearly and unmistakably to NBC News to leave such political statement on the side because the 90 seconds have nothing to do with such evacuation news. On top of the fact that, it took much more than 90 seconds to evacuate. I’ve read an article on NHK WORLD (English news in Japan) and that reports the evacuation was complete in 18 minutes, not 90 seconds, until the captain left the aircraft after all evacuation was done.
According to the article, the aircraft landed at 5:47pm, and immediately collided with the CG airplane. It skidded for 1 km before stopping. Within a minute the smoke started coming inside. The attendants reported the cockpit that the aircraft was burning, then urged people to stay calm, cover mouth and nose and stay low as possible, as they started opening the exits. At this point the intercom was not functioning anymore so it was their independent decision (not the captain’s order). Some passengers were heard asking loudly “Can’t you just open the door already “ or “ please let us out now”but all passengers followed the attendants’ instructions.
*edit: the voice sounds like a child’s, and not “yelling”, more like complaining and asking loudly why they couldn’t just open the door and flee.
After the passengers and the attendants evacuated, the crew followed, but the captain remained to check the cabin one row at a time for possible remaining passengers. After finished, the captain evacuated at 6:05pm, 18 minutes after the landing. 10 minutes later the aircraft was totally engulfed by fire.
On top of the calm, accurate, and independent-thinking attendants and orderly behavior by the passengers, the aircraft was new and made with materials that don’t burn easily, which helped prolong the evacuation time, according to the report.
It didn’t mention how long it took for the passengers to finish evacuation, so it was certainly shorter than 18 minutes but I don’t know how much shorter.

Many years ago something similar happened. A commercial jet literally landed on a puddle jumper (a prop) at night.
It was a ATC miscommunication and the NTSB found the commercial jet pilots would have had difficulty seeing that prop planes lights against the landing/takeoff lights.

The bright orange not box shaped voice and data recorders are not called Black Boxes by the aviation industry. And Large jet airplanes are never on Tarmac unless they leave the airport and end up on some city road somewhere. How many other things doe the news media get wrong all the time.
Even though the lights were out, the Coast Guard plane was told to taxi and hold. One wonders if the lights being out somehow contributed to the pilots decision to taxi out on to the runway. RIP to all the Coast Guard victims.

If the crew of the Japan coast gaurd plane saw the holding lights were of, they could have mistakenly believed they were cleared to take off. a small mistake can bring disaster, so sad to see.

What a year of 2024 to start of.My deepest condolences to those who were killed.
Kudos to the JAL crew for getting everyone out of a burning plane safely.
When in an emergency, people need to keep their cool. The coast guard plane should have been more careful of their surrounding than trying to rush to help the earthquake victims. My condolences for the people of Japan, I hope the rescue operations continue, but please keep a steady mind for your own survival.

Let me firstly pass my condolences to the family of the other aircraft whose crew lost their lives. They obviously forgot protocol, or were confused, in their hurry to provide relief to people in the earthquake – and you can’t hurry when piloting aircraft or be confused. The exact same thing has happened in Australia in the past with ensuing deaths.
As an Air Crash Investigation tragic, I note that former investigators John Cox and John Nance both said, “You should feel safe when you board a modern airplane because flying is safer than ever.” Sorry, but I call BS. If anything, this accident is pure evidence of why I feel LESS safe than ever. Didn’t the TCAS alert the jet to the plane on the ground – or doesn’t it work in this case? If not, it should work in this case. Whilesoever planes fly in the air – regardless of being piloted by people or computers – this crash is a devastating reminder that deadly accidents like this will ALWAYS happen.
This time, the video of the fire was far more horrifyingly realistic than what you see on Air Crash – you didn’t even need to imagine how hot it was – watching the video you felt like you were there as it unfolded. It was just pure LUCK than the JAL jet’s slides opened properly, without the escape doors jamming shut, or without the slides inflating INWARDS.
If that had happened, the passengers would have been ROASTED by the decision of ‘let’s-save-(fuel)-money-by-making-the-airframe-out-of-something-that-burns-MUCH-longer-and-is-much-harder-to-put-out (hey, it IS carbon, used in coal form for making roaring fires). If it doesn’t delaminate in the air, of course.

I think the carbon composite were able to absorb the heat and not burn immediately. This allowed all the passengers to get out. But once it burned it burned completely from back to front. I saw the tail portion actually slump onto the tarmac and continue to burn.

The media keeps repeating that the passengers were all off of the airplane in “less than 90 seconds.” Ninety seconds is the maximum time allowed for a full aircraft to be evacuated during certification trials for the airplane type. These trials are typically conducted with a plane full of healthy airline employees familiar with the airplane’s exits and waiting for the starting signal to perform a rapid exit. The chances that the airplane in this accident was actually cleared in that time is small. Also, if the airplane had been full of overweight and argumentative Americans rather than Japanese who are accustomed to following the rules, the death toll undoubtedly would have been substantial.

No, it’s still down to the Coast Guard aircraft. Apart from failing to obey the instructions that were given by ATC, think of the lights as traffic lights at a junction, if they’re out it doesn’t mean you can ignore the stop line (yes they have those leading onto the runway) and go barrelling through the junction.
Less than 90 seconds to evacuate? Assuming NBC is correct (I never assume anything), this is really fast.

The news these days is always so confusing and never gets to the point. So annoying.
So my family just wanted to watch news on Japan ‘s plane crash. I don’t know if it was auto play or what…but NBC has tons of negative news. I don’t know if that’s the norm or what. There’s nothing jolly about American news… It only has the worst………
