According to a report, more than 100 billion gallons of untreated sewage and industrial waste has spilled into the Pacific Ocean from the Tijuana River over the past five years. NBC News’ Steven Romo reports that the toxic waste may pose a health risk to kids, elderly, and pregnant people in the San Diego area.

In August 2022, the IBWC announced Minute No. 328, titled “Sanitation Infrastructure Projects in San Diego, California – Tijuana, Baja California for Immediate Implementation and for Future Development.” This agreement outlines sanitation projects funded by $330 million from the U.S. government and *$144 million from the Mexican government.* The expected outcomes include a 50% reduction in transboundary wastewater flow days and an 80% reduction in untreated wastewater discharge.
The agreement includes doubling the capacity of the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant (SBIWTP) in the United States. Additionally, *a new treatment plant will be constructed in Mexico at San Antonio de los Buenos.*

Globally clean consumable water is scare and limited. Toxins made and thrown by humans are causing the scarcity much more prevalent and harder to fully clean.
