San Francisco authorities have added suicide-deterrent nets to the sides of the Golden Gate Bridge. The steel nets are designed to offer a second chance to those struggling with mental health issues. The installation has already shown progress, according to officials.

$224 million?!!!
200 millions for a net is crazy
In Toronto they put nets on the Bloor Viaduct, the jumpers then strolled over to the Leaside Bridge and did their jumping from there.
Well, time to look for somewhere else.
I’m surprised there’s not homeless encampments on the nets
Oh no. I hope I didn’t give anybody any ideas
They underestimate my ability to jump over those nets
Suicide is a sin
Sin isn’t real
I’m sorry but 224 million for some nets
No fair…😢
Nice try, not even a silly net will deter me from taking my own life
If a person really wanted to commit suicide they would find other ways to do so and a net would not stop them speaking from a person who has been depressed for 6 yrs and have made several attempts to
They added a trampoline so now we can jump in style 😂
Nets won’t stop anyone from jumping, they’ll just find another bridge. The more people who know about these nets before hand, the less people will pick this bridge over another one. How about we tackle the things that make them want to jump in the first place rather than spending $224 million of taxpayers dollars on a short term solution. Lets put that money towards the housing crisis, or the ever widening gap in wealth, or raising minimum wage to something that’s actually livable, or making healthcare affordable so people can actually afford medicine and therapy. This is just a publicity stunt for whoever gave the go ahead to build it to boost their political standing, don’t fall for mediocrity and doing the bare minimum.
Anyone want to mention the huge rise in bridge jumpers at ALL THE OTHER BAY AREA BRIDGES since these nets were installed? Nah… $224M well spent… totally effective.
Isn’t this classic USA. Instead of adressing the reasons why people are jumping and commiting suicides (mostly depression derived from poverty), they build suicide nets. Like that is going to stop them.
My question is why did it take so long to install something like this
This should’ve been added decades ago… that’s insane that it took this long.
That will stop them… NOT!
Im sorry but $224 million is too much. With that kinda money you can save many more lives fixing other aspects of our society
I went to san fransico in 2022 and these were here? am i missing something
I’ve heard that 99.9 % of people who committed suicide instantly regrets it the moment they do it. Please, no matter how hard life is someday, one day there will be that light at the end of the tunnel and your better days will come. Just hang in there, you only live once make it worth it. ❤
san Fransisco: should we put more funding into mental health doctors? nah lets make a national landmark uglier
Wow. This js intense. What a great video for awareness, and making a change to the bridge.
Welcome to china!
What if someone jumped on the nets can they saved?
Although this a heartwarming story, I think that is disrespectful to install this device as a deterrent. All it does is prolong the inevtiable and statics show a very clear indiction of it being a life long battle with most individuals trying 2-3 times, if unsuccessful. Who are you to take away the choices from people?
when u fall u could just walk over it or crawl
Your worst days prepare you for your best days.
I won’t forget that. 😢
Won’t this just make people commit suicide in other places / ways though? I’m not knocking the idea, I just think it shifts the problem from one place to another as opposed to fixing it
america freedom: where u are not even allow to end your own life.
is there anything in our life that we truly have control over?
Lol, 224M for some net, surely this great country’s infrastructure will go great!
American GREED and the GOP are to blame !
R.I.P Desmond a.k.a Etika 😭😭❤️❤️
Wassup with people hating suicidal victims in the comments? 😂
2:05 WHY Exactly?? Why would you want to physically harm already emotionally vulnerable people?? Doesn’t make sense to me
so they get another chance 2 think about it. They put it so when they see the hard hitting nets they think about jumping again, thinking if they want to fall into quite literally “cheese graters”
Couple of things.
1. Golden Gate Bridge Patrol don’t get the credit they deserve. They’re the ones that see’s this on a daily basis and actually the ones that does Crisis Intervention on the bridge.
2. I’m not taking anything away from CHP, but that Officer didn’t have as much saves as he says he does. Those that knows, knows.
3. I say this with the utmost respect, but the net doesn’t do much to prevent people from jumping. If they truly want to, they will just jump on the net and onto the water. If anything, it makes it more difficult to negotiate with anyone having a crisis.
To those who have loss anyone at the bridge. I’m sorry for your loss and I hope you find peace.
Former Bridge Patrol Officer
It’s the “greatest country” in the world, but we have to seal all the windows shut or people will jump out.
still u can jump a bit far n got it ^^
You matter ❤
Over 2000 deaths but make no mistake, the suicide attempts might me 10x higher
Those nets ain’t gonna do anything. They can just walk across them nets
They would definitely see those nets and know what they would be for :’-|
Van Helen s Jump 😮
I remember when they criticized China over putting nets like this outside their factories. Now San Francisco is one giant Chinese factorcy? They spent a fortune to put on nets instead of spending that fortune on helping the few who wind up there.
remember to work on your long jump lads
so now its a 2 step suicide
Exactly what i said. They can jump onto the nets then crawl to the edge & go
Whats stopping someone from jumping off the net?
“Hey, I felt on a net….oh well, I guess I’ll have to jump from this net next”
Good that they can now remove the tall fence that blocks views.
Bruh they add nets?
That bridge name in Africa is suicide bridge not golden gate
More proof that *all hope is NOT lost!*
If you can be helped then good for you, personally though, I believe suicide is a human right that cannot be taken away. I have many reasons for this belief and see it from both sides. My belief is not wrong. I don’t encourage it or discourage it.
Go on and live long and productive lives. Your worth is only determined by what you produce
Just in time before the great recession & great reset starts.
Well it’s about time!!! I have lived in the Bay my entire life and it always seemed weird that there wasn’t anything to prevent this from happening construction wise.
mfs ain’t going to skip leg day too get that
Well, isn’t that a perfect sign of the times we’re all living in these days.
“Don’t fix the problem, just put up a net”
-Corporate America
FINALLY only after 9 *DECADES*
still wont stop me from jumping off
Read…
People will still comm*t s**cide they will still do it one way or another
Let em go let em go
I love that this is in place, but let’s also change things with this economy too! I am a federal employee that processes applications regarding disability, Medicare, and retirement. Let’s just say that I understand situations like depression and ending it because of not being able to afford living and barely qualifying for anything when you worked all of your life and/or dedicating time to the military. With that being said, I feel bad because I can never agree on a recorded line with how they feel about resources going elsewhere but to elders or individuals such as themselves and I even had one threaten to end their life because they feel like “what’s the point”. Sad world this is
this world needs a little more hope
2:46 jizzies club san fierro
Only in Biden’s economy
We have them on the Sunshine Skyway in Florida too. Thankfully
Nahhh if im jumping to my death its gonna be skydiving into an active volcano belly flop
Uh can you not just jump over the net or jump from the net over to the edge?
Waste of money. They put the net in the entirely wrong place. Actually sad
You can sip on your $15 iced coffee in your Porsche on your way to work where you’re passing multi million dollar ranch style homes, and as you get your windows busted out and carjacked at the next intersection. The beautiful California hilly landscape you used to have for your view gets replaced with homeless encampments…. ahhh, living that California dream! Now adding unaliv3 nets to the list of why the state is so great. I thought they had all the answers…. to say I am happy to have left would be an understatement! Maybe the politicians there should actually do more instead of put on a fake facade for a persona lie to get power and money. They don’t actually care about you. Maybe more Californians should wake up and smell reality!!
oh no my plans are foiled!
Oh cool, dystopian advocacy and millions being wasted which are obviously in someone with powers hands
They spent all that money to install these nets but all the person has to do is clear 5 feet lol
They should’ve added this sooner
224 million dollars????
220 Million? for nets! wow I would have done it for 10mil.
That’s really interesting. I always thought nets wouldn’t work because people could simply climb up them and fall the rest of the way, but the visual deterrence and that “I really regret doing this” feeling make them sound really effective. 50% less deaths is a lot less heartbreak for many families.
instead of fixing the problems that make people wanna leave this rock they make it harder for them to leave 😂😂
Which is sad. Not funny.
if im being honest it looks like someone can just hop the net
It’s okay, I’m sure everyone still has a tub and a toaster oven.
couldn’t they just crawl off the net ?
Can’t play god especially if it costs $224 million. That money can go to other people
2:20 Wait what? It’s to hurt people more? 😂
Just like in Chinese factory…
Cool!! 🫠
My best friend died on this bridge way back on 2012. If only these steel nets installed back then, there may have been a deterrent for my friend. It is sad.
Back in 2006 Briggs pulled me over for speeding and reckless driving but I was cool with him and he only wrote me a seat belt ticket which saved me hundreds of dollars and not having to go to Court….One COOL Cop!!!
Idk I could probably clear it
You can see and hear that Briggs is a good person, maybe even an angel. God bless him and those he have saved. Lets hope they turn their life around and do good things.
You don’t make your own choices in California you do what the government wants you to do.
There goes my 5 year plan
Great, it’s definitely important to prevent things like this, but $224 million? That is insane! I feel like it could’ve been spent for a lot better of a cause… Something that could’ve helped a lot more people.
we have failed has a civilization
They can still fall of top of the net
I love that people who have probably never been suicidal in their lives are the ones who get to decide to make ending it all harder. We get it, you think life is worth living. Not all lives are, though. Some of us just want the pain to stop. You aren’t helping anyone, even if you think you are. You’re just prolonging agony. If you really wanna help people, instead of spending money on this, spend money on trying to make life a little less terrible. Lobbyists, perhaps.
Some ppl just need to see the view from half way down to realize their mistake.
Will they put a second layer of nets below the first layer for the super determined?
why weren’t the NETS added a LONG TIME AGO
Literal compilation of it
social media ruined mankind
