A Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in Pennsylvania, spilling oil and plastic pellets into a nearby river. Norfolk Southern says that there is no threat to the public, there have been no reports of injuries and no hazardous material concerns.

That is their official policy. They actually propose have only the driver on these 2 mile trains to complete a “safety” inspection of the train in 30 minutes. That’s a 4 mile walk.

These trains are operated with minimal crew (1-2) and are pulling ever-longer loads in an effort to increase profitability. Eventually profitability and safety butt heads and it is unfortunately very easy for some to shrug off spills and disasters that occur in places they do not live and will never visit.

When everything is run by computers that can easily be hacked this can also happen. I don’t buy the sink hole story one bit. I know a trackman from NS that patrols that area. He didn’t see no sink holes today or yesterday.

For now trains are still run by an engineer/operator, or else I’d be eating out of a dumpster. track inspector almost always miss sinkholes. Most open up underneath the train or hide in plain sight. early in my career I was on a train that ran off in a sinkhole, which opened up from steel culvert

Track had nothing to do with it. One train rear ended another, and the resulting wreck was hit by a third train going in the opposite direction.

It’s difficult to not start asking the obvious question about infrastructure restoration/modernization. I don’t recall if Trump ever campaigned about needing to raise taxes for infrastructure, but I know Obama made a big deal about doing so and I think Biden did as well. Yet, here we are with another train derailment. Our freight and passenger trains and rails are ancient and it’s only when one travels abroad that one realizes this and it’s downright embarrassing. I’ve been to France and their rail system is superior to ours. When will the media and our citizens start to demand more and hold these politicians, who hold our tax dollars hostage accountable? This is a disgrace!

To any of you thinking politics, rail companies such as CSX and NS are PRIVATIZED. The last nationalized railroad was Conrail in the 70s/80s.

On Monday, Norfolk Southern also hit back at the activist investor’s call to fire Shaw in the wake of the latest derailment. “We believe that a change in leadership at Norfolk Southern would be highly disruptive to our operations, our workers, and the North American supply chain,” the company said in a statement emailed to MarketWatch.
I really dont see any real adverse disruptions occuring from folks with a plan to improve railroad safety. What i do see is Alan Shaw robbing his company blind. Any NS engineers or conductors want to weigh in with how poorly you’ve all been treated the past few years; Mr. Shaw has increased your hours, decreased your PTO and taken all the money he saved from that and promptly deposited it in his bank account. Jammie Boychuck was a godsend for CSX and he will be the same for Norfolk Southern.
