Major League Baseball has opened an investigation after illegal gambling allegations emerged involving star LA Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Ohtani’s involvement is unclear, and his lawyers say he was the victim of “massive theft.” NBC News’ David Noriega has more on the unanswered questions.

First
he’ll be forgiven since he’s not white or named Pete Rose.
Nobody cares about the interpreter…they’re going for Shohei…lol.
It started
I bet this story is only going to get crazier.
Is ohtani betting on this too?
@@andrewstern7295 can’t eliminate that possibility. for all we know, Mizuhara’s gambling habit rubbed off on Ohtani and they were placing bets together, with Mizu as the middle man and Ohtani providing the funds.
It sounds like Ohtani, out of a sense of charity, bailed Mizuhara out of gambling debt not knowing that he violated MLB rules by doing so. So now, Ohtani’s lawyers are trying to spin this as a case where Mizuhara stole Ohtani’s money without Ohtani’s knowledge.
I get why Ohtani’s lawyers are spinning the matter as they are. And frankly, it’s hard to blame them. All Ohtani did was bail a friend out. He wasn’t involved in any actual wrongdoing. But still, it seems somewhat unethical to accuse a recipient of money that was voluntarily given of theft.
No. Ohtani had zero involvement. Ippei had full access to Ohtani’s banking and wired the money right under his nose.
@lukedaniell Would Dodgers and Ohtani take the risk to make the interpreter as a fall guy? FBI and other authorities are investigating so the truth will come out eventually. What if they find out Ohtani himself actually sent the money. The fans will hate Ohtani and he will lose all endorsement deals, and the damages to Dodgers organization will be huge. If Dodgers had not retract the interpreter’s 90 minutes story, Ohtani probably would have received some disciplinary action but the fans and the media would see his action as what a friend would have done to help his friend. I just hope Dodgers and their lawyer were not that stupid to take that risk.
Ohtani did not violate any rules. Betting on baseball is violating rules, betting on any other sports is not
Maybe the money “given” was not the same amount of money “received”?
Ohtani had nothing to do with this. Shohei was helping his friend out but it turned out the sportsbook company he wired was operatinging illegally in California because Ippie never told him that (Shohei thought he was wiring to a legal sportsbook similar to Fanduel and Draftkings).
No one saw this coming, I’m sure the Dodgers investigators missed this one.
Let’s be Real: Ohtani was the one placing the bets and he’s been a compulsive gambler for a long time. Pete Rose 2.0
What’s your reasoning?
And he had attended a school specializing in casino dealerships. Any normal person would judge that Ippei acted alone in committing these crimes😂

Why would they?😂😂😂

No it’s not. Now, they found out Ippei falsified his college record(which he never went) and he never worked for the Red Sox. The guy is a conman finally got caught, hopefully goes to prison
not that serious
Yeah but news needs to be fed.
Tell that to Pete Rose
@@LouieOcean. Did they bet on baseball?
Ohtani 100% needs to be SUSPENDED until the investigation is over.
If it where any other player, they would have suspended them.
Relax princess lol.
No fxxxxxx way!
So that you can win the bet??
To be suspended there needs to be proof. But there’s nothing other than that the interpreter works under him.
Suspended for what? 😅
I believe everything Ippei said but I can’t fathom for the life of me understand why the Ohtani camp would let him do a 2 hour interview about it with ESPN without informing the lawyers and the Dodgers org.
I don’t believe his story. It doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. More than likely he was placing bets for ohtani if ohtani knew about the transactions, and I can guarantee the bookie was under the impression he was betting for ohtani to allow just the initial 500k credit line.
Once you default on paying a bookie for a bet, he is done taking your bets. If you can’t pay 500k you won’t be able to pay future losses. Maybe you let the first 500k slide because you think ohtani is betting and know he’s good for it, but you start asking questions after the next 500k, or the 500k after. As a bookie you probably covered yourself and made sure ohtani’s $500k in bets were offset with $500k in bets on the other side, meaning for every $1 million owed to the bookie, the bookie has probably paid out $900k in winning bets. If the bookie can’t settle the debt, he is personally out a lot of $. There’s just no way he allowed a translator who made 60k per year until recently rack up even a million in debt. A juice loan from a loan shark will be 1-2% interest weekly. A guy making $60k per year can’t afford to pay $5k-$10k per week interest on a $500k juice loan to pay his gambling debt never mind juice on a million, or 2 million. There’s no way he got that much personal credit from a bookie.
@@patrickledonne5547 I doubt Ohtani was betting on college sports… that sounds like something Ippei would do having grown up in LA. The likely explanation is fraud. Ohtani probably just trusted ippei and gave him way too much financial access and responsibility and he took advantage. You see it all the time with celebrities… they trust their family or close friend and money goes missing.
@@patrickledonne5547Ohtani had nothing to do with this. When I saw $4 million dollars in debt I knew right away Shohei was innocent, he would never be in debt like Ippie, because Shohei makes over $100 million dollars on endorsements alone.
@patrickledonne5547 everything is coming out on Ippei. His lying(resume) and gambling addiction . Bookie probably used that as his advantage to give millions in credits knowing Ippei’s relation to Ohtani. Ippei is a degenerate gambler who probably hit “rock bottom”, more than likely begged Ohtani to get him out of trouble. Very unlikely Ohtani gambles. We’ll see after the investigation and if Ohtani is cleared, you’re still going to have haters accusing Ohtani no matter what the outcome is
Ippei for president
Mizuhara is the scapegoat lol. He was likely acting as a go between Ohtani and bookie.
#StopAAPIHate
🤣
Hmmm…
The money was being wired from Ohtani’s account.
Banks do not wire that money multiple times without speaking to the account holder, Ohtani.
So, for sure they have the recordings of him ordering the transfers to the bookies recorded.
He is in deep trouble with MLB.
I’m wondering if Ohtani was giving the okay to wire the money thinking it was going to a charity. Ippei could have facilitated/translated the interactions with the banks and misled Ohtani about where the $500k was going each time. So technically Ohtani knew about the goings of the $500k sums but never knew it was for gambling. The money came out of an account that Ohtani used to donate money.
thats not true because I heard the bookmaker said to put the word “loan” for the money transfers which means it cant be a donation and Shohei might be on tape saying its for a loan, either way it is illegal how the debt was paid off from the Feds point of view.@@CAsaidit
Think it would be pretty hard to steal 4 1/2 million without his knowledge ….perhaps he made the bets for him.
I can’t believe you idiots payed 325 million for that pitcher he’s garbage. No arbitration to check this guy out. Sorry WALKER BUELLER you deserve more than 8 million

He lied about the university he graduated and he lied about borrowing money from Shohei. He made 500,000 a year last year but the first year was about $60,000 a year as a interpreter.
How he was gonna pay Shohei back with that salary.
It is said that he was like a manager of Shohei so he could access one account for charity and the balance was about $10 million.
Its not surprising. How many managers and associates have scammed people out of these peoples money? U cant even trust ur own accountant who does the taxed these days.
A 5 million dollar fine for the Dodgers please. They hired him.
4.5m line of credit for an interpreter is crazy. There’s something else at play here..

If MLB throws Ohtani under the bus, I’m turning off MLB *forever*.
Exactly and it’s the cash cow and cream of the crop . They sweeping this under the rug for sure
MLB wouldn’t miss you
Why is this happening now?
Because feds were investigating the bookmaker and Ippei’s name popped up.
why don’t you tell that Ippei lied his own career
He claimed he graduated from UC Riverside in 2007. and the school has no record.
And Japanese media reported that he went to a CASINO SCHOOL IN THE US TO BECOME A DEALER.
He also lied about working for the RedSox
Pete Ohtani was betting through proxy, but never on baseball.
Ipoei is conman. No, similarities to Rose😅

I feel sorry for your mother 😑
I don’t think even MLB fans care about this.
Just the dodger haters😅
I hope they uncover the text msgs of both of them and the bank so we know if ohtani was aware of this or not.
Ippei Is not just a interpreter, he is like a manager + butler. Officially the Dodgers pay him as a interpreter, but Ohtani also pay him on top of that salary for all the work he does outside of interpretation. It wouldn’t be shocking to know Ippei has access to some of Ohtani’s very many accounts and can withdraw funds easily worth 4.5 mil.
That being said, the whole thing is suspect. In cases like this usually the simplest explanation is the correct one, basically Ohtani became aware of Ippei’s debt, helped him pay it off directly so he doesn’t gamble with it, but didn’t realize it is still a crime, so lawyers got in and tell him to back peddle everything and say Ippei stole it. Alternatively, Ohtani knew Ippei had some debts but didn’t know it was an illegal gambling, so he offered to cover it up without knowledge it was illegal. Finally, Ippei could have also lied to Ohtani on what the money was for … aka maybe charity instead.
The whole Ohtani was the one gambling makes 0 sense. If Ippei was the mule, why isn’t he the one transferring the money? The whole point of having a mule is avoid the money going back to the owner. It makes 0 sense to have someone else doing the gambling but paying with your own account.
You’re speculating. It’s being investigated. Now, it’s known Ippei falsified his resume. Seems the guy is a conman.
I’m hearing shohei was betting on soccer. It’s going to be interesting how mlb covers this up to save the brand.
OK but what if ohtani was betting on baseball games?

Interpreter Ippei is not well known in the United States. This is because interpreters rarely attract attention in the United States. However, Shohei is much better known than Ippei. Therefore, many Americans feel that Shohei Otani is deeply involved in this case, and there are many articles about Shohei’s “alleged money transfer. If the facts don’t pile up soon to demonstrate that Shohei is unrelated and a complete victim, it could be a matter of the player’s life.
Hopefully this story keeps going and we find out Shohei was involved too 🍿 🍿 🍿
Hollywood drama at its finest and most tawdry
This Mizuhara guy is starting to sound like George Santos of baseball. We know now that he lied about attending UC Riverside, he actually went to a casino school, lied about working as an interpreter for the Red Sox, lied about working as an interpreter for the Yankees before he met Ohtani back in 2013. I feel bad for Ohtani so far since he trusted Mizuhara for all these years.
When I saw 4 million dollars in debt I knew right away Shohei was innocent, he would never be in debt like Ippie, because Shohei makes over 100 million dollars on endorsements alone.
We investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoing, thank you.
Ohtani had nothing to do with this. The lastest news on this right now is, they said Ohtani wanted to help Ippie on his debt and wired money himself so his friend would not use the money to gamble, and Ohtani did’nt even know anything about that sportsbook company being operated illegally, (he knew gambling was illegal in California) but he thought it was one of the legal sportsbooks similar to Fanduel and Draftkings that he was wiring for his friend. This is the lastest news so far and more will come out, but Im waiting until the investigation is completed before making a judgment and accusing him and making myself a fool like the trolls online right now.
Shohei want’s to comment on the case, but the federal agents are probrably advising him not to comment, that’s usually the case when doing an investigation.
People are to quick to judge. We live in a society where people are deemed guilty before innocence and innocent until proven guilty (especially in this social media age with the trolls) Let the facts and investigation do their job first, personally for me I think Ohtani is 100% innocent.

Ladies and gentlemen, please consider. Let me introduce two individuals, A and B.
A, a person, immigrated from Japan to California, USA, at a young age with his family. He grew up in America and attended school with the ambition of becoming a casino dealer. However, he gave up on his dream of becoming a casino dealer and opted for a different career path. Later, he moved back to Japan and falsified his resume by claiming to have graduated from a university he didn’t attend and falsely stated that he worked as an interpreter for the Red Sox, to secure a position as an interpreter for a professional baseball team in Japan.
On the other hand, B, another person, started playing baseball since elementary school and continued playing throughout middle school and high school. He gained attention from all over Japan as a baseball player since his student days. His dream was to become a professional baseball player in Major League Baseball. Initially, people in Japan ridiculed him for aiming to excel as both a pitcher and a batter, but he persevered and achieved it. He then challenged himself in Major League Baseball and led Japan to victory in the WBC.
A refers to Mizuhara, who was recently discovered to have continuously falsified his career and educational background. On the other hand, B refers to Otani, who honed his baseball talent in America, the holy land of baseball, and established a genuine new history. Wise individuals will be able to discern whom to believe in.
I suspect that UC Riverside is also behind this.

His involvement? It’s apparent that he’s a Degenerate Gambler whether he’s wearing Angel Red or Dodger Blue! No massive theft here. That’s just misdirection because the MLB needs a scapegoat to ensure their star player stays playing and keeps the fans watching. He needs to be banned from Baseball for life!
