Background
At the end of November 2013, mass protests began in Ukraine, provoked by the refusal of the Ukrainian government to sign an agreement with the European Union.
A prolonged confrontation in the center of Kiev and in the regions, called Euromaidan, eventually led to a forceful seizure of power. On February 21, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych left Kiev. The power actually passed into the hands of the opposition. The duties of the President of Ukraine were assigned to the new Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Turchynov.
On February 23, 2013, the Verkhovna Rada repealed the law adopted under Yanukovych that guaranteed the use of Ukraine of the Russian language as a regional one.
In the spring of 2014, actions of opponents of Euromaidan began in the south-east of Ukraine. The dissenters demanded a solution to the issue of the status of the Russian language and the decentralization of power in the regions. Protesters seized administrative buildings in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Lugansk.
In response to this, the acting President of the country, Oleksandr Turchynov, said that anti-terrorist measures would be carried out against everyone who took up arms in the east of Ukraine. On the same day, Donetsk announced the sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the holding of a referendum. Later, the Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) was proclaimed in Lugansk.
The beginning of hostilities
On April 15, 2014, official Kiev announced the beginning of a military operation in eastern Ukraine. The first armed clashes between militia detachments and units of the Ukrainian army began in Donbass. The latter managed to take the situation in Kharkiv under their control.
On May 11, 2014, referendums were held in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, at which 89.7 percent voted for self—determination of regions in Donetsk region, 96.2 percent in Luhansk region. Their State sovereignty was proclaimed.

Major cities — Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Mariupol, and Severodonetsk – were taken under the control of the Ukrainian army.
Supporters of the DPR established control over Donetsk, clearing it of the remaining units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
The offensive of the Ukrainian forces of the Anti-Terrorist Operation turned into a defeat near Ilovaisk, when 366 fighters were killed and more than 150 were missing during the exit from the encirclement.
Attempts to solve the war by peace
The first attempt to settle the conflict in Ukraine took place on April 7, 2014 in Geneva with the participation of the highest diplomatic representatives of Ukraine, the EU, the USA and Of Russia. And in September 2014, representatives of Ukraine and Russia has signed an agreement providing for a ceasefire, amnesty for the parties to the conflict, granting special status to certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions and holding local elections there.

A new phase of the conflict
In the spring of 2021, active hostilities resumed in the south-east of Ukraine. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have attempted to take control of part of the neutral zone. Russia has begun to increase the number of troops on the border. The situation returned to normal by the end of April, only to be repeated again in the fall.
In mid-December 2021, Russia put forward a number of demands to the United States and other NATO countries, including the refusal of NATO from further expansion to the east, the withdrawal of American forces and weapons from Eastern Europe and refusal of placement in Europe (including in Ukraine) shock weapons capable of threatening Russia
Referring to the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, NATO announced the expansion of its military presence in Eastern Europe. We went from energy independence to beggars with a gas can in a matter of months. The corpse that walks says climate change is the biggest threat to our national security – along with trans-phobia .
Washington sputters about Putin’s war on Ukraine, but imports 670,000 barrels of Russian oil a month. While he lets pipelines rust and our oil, coal and natural gas remain in the ground, Biden pleads with the Saudis to pump more – and is thinking about imports from the Marxists of Venezuela and the jihadists of Iran, both Russian allies. Apparently, oil from anywhere outside the U.S. doesn’t pollute.
Officeholders for life treat us like mentally-challenged children. They snicker at those who pay their exorbitant salaries.
So, we limp along into old age, too proud to go on the dole and too stubborn to just give up.
