Just days prior, Trump said abortion should be decided by the states, but did not say what he would do if given the chance to sign a national ban.

…that’s not a contradiction lol. You can be not in favor of something and also completely satisfied with the system. I do not want Congress to ban abortion for all states. Therefore, I do not want Congress to legalize it as a required law for all states. Reason being obvious: you DO NOT get to decide which way the majority votes. The majority can vote in an opposite direction 10 years from now. So don’t push for that power at all. Let the states make the rules for their community… not random guys a thousand miles away who have never even been to that state or spoken to anyone there (most state senators and representative haven’t been to every state. Technically, most haven’t even been to half).

States rights are an interesting grey area of US politics. I agree that for certain issues, states are the best ones to make decisions, but that comes down to issues that relate specifically to those states. Not all issues are states rights issues. Abortion is not one of those issues. Surveys and polling very clearly shows that people, specifically women, in every single state care very deeply about protecting abortion. Just like you don’t believe that people in states far away shouldn’t be able to decide certain laws for states, these people believe old men in the state legislature shouldn’t be able to dictate whether or not they can get these procedures. I don’t believe I should have a say in something I will never be directly affected by. But my opinion is that something like Roe was far more neutral and at the end of the day, closer to the core intention of states rights than the alternative. You wanted an abortion, go get one as long as you stay within certain restrictions. You don’t want one, don’t get one. People who complained about roe are like people in California complaining about Texas laws. Don’t like it, don’t live there, don’t like abortion, don’t get one.
