When it comes to public institutions and public authorities, there is firm jurisprudence indicating that the First Amendment does not recognize any distinction between hate speech and non-hateful free speech. It’s all speech, and it’s all free. That is one of the reasons people are so upset at politicians and authorities for picking and choosing which movements and protests are held to higher standards in terms of how many protest participants are doing violence or vandalism, how disruptive to the public or to the business of the (public) institutions the protests are. Most of these colleges are considered public institutions under the law for the purposes of speech and trespassing laws, and most of the protesters live on those campuses, also.
