Why the UAE’s Falcon AI model is open source

The UAE released its new Falcon 2 AI models earlier this month, which its government claims outperform Meta’s Llama 3 and Google’s Gemma 7B.

The country has also opted to make Falcon open source, allowing others to modify its source code for their own uses. This is to “create an alternative rather than just having one option to the world,” says the chief of UAE’s Advanced Technology Research Council.
