If a data breach meant life in prison, these breaches would stop. Just encrypt the data in transit and at rest, that’s all you have to do.

Data breaches will always happen. In a certain part of the Dark Web, they have thousands of stolen SSN, and dozen others. You can’t protect yourselfs at all, no matter what you do. Their are so many skilled hackers out there who can bypass that security like nothing. Just live your life at this point.

Our Social Security numbers were never supposed to get used as ID, and that’s exactly what they started insisting on. I’ve been in so many arguments about this, and there was never an alternative, and should have been!

I looked this place up. Did the search on my information and Pentester only gives basic information like basic as in the accounts affected and that’s it – to get any kind of details of what else was compromised- Pentester charges a hefty fee . Not only do they charge a hefty fee for details but then extort you for HUNDREDS to help you remove the compromised accounts ! It’s not even guaranteed to fix the problem. I’m starting to think that maybe Pentester is the real fraud here !!

the question is what is the government going to do about it. It seems to me that everyone affected should be able to apply for a new ssn.
It is time for emergency bipartisan legislation to 1) make use of SSN as identification a punishable criminal offense, and 2) appropriate funding to reissue new SSN numbers in a new format and modify existing systems to use them. The new numbers must be usable only for purposes that require interface with the Social Security Administration (mainly: taxation and medical services). Credit bureaus and other private businesses with no need to interface with the SSA can kick rocks – states issue uniquely numbered identification, use that.
