Palestinians in Gaza hope for a truce announcement

The ongoing truce talks in Doha and what is going on in the UN Security Council have been major topics among displaced Palestinians in Rafah city. People who are starving and dealing with acute famine in the northern part are also hoping that there will be a solid announcement of a ceasefire – not a temporary truce, but a permanent ceasefire is what they want to get back to their life as they know it. Right now, not only we are looking at the humanitarian level of the crisis, but also the ongoing state of panic and fear due to Israel’s constant threat of expanding ints ground invasion into Rafah […]

Unclear how much flexibility Israeli negotiators will show in Qatar

Compared to the last round of truce talks in Cairo, to which Israel publicly said it would not send a delegation, this seems to be an improvement on their willingness to have a conversation. What we don’t yet know is who will be attending the talks on behalf of the Israeli delegation in Qatar, what their seniority is, and quite crucially, the extent of their mandate. How much flexibility will the Israeli government give them to negotiate the finer points of any agreement? At the same time, Netanyahu’s approval of a ground assault in Rafah may essentially be a threat, a maximalist position, as you would expect during public negotiations […]

‘Tense situation’ at West Bank checkpoint ahead of Friday prayers

About 45 minutes before prayers start, people waiting here at the checkpoint outside Jerusalem still hope they will have a chance to enter Al-Aqsa Mosque. There are new restrictions men must be aged 55 or older to enter the mosque, and women must be 50 or older. Previously, there were no age restrictions on women and the age restriction for men was 45. All worshippers must also have valid entry permits, a document many Palestinians say they did not know they needed. We’ve seen people being turned away at the checkpoint for this reason, and Israeli soldiers are surrounding the nearby area. There are additional restrictions on Palestinians leaving Al-Aqsa. […]

America has changed its tone but not its policy towards Israel yet: Marwan Bishara

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says there are “clear differences” between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “There is definitely increasing heat between the prime minister and the president,” he said. “But I think Biden is underlining a change of tone, not a change of policy. And that explains a bit why he sounds as if he’s speaking from both sides of his mouth. On one hand, he talks about red lines, and on the other hand, he talks about continuing basically unconditional support.” According to Bishara, the Biden administration made the “mistake” of making US support for Israel unconditional. “But for more than […]

Gantz will likely ask for military assistance from US, analyst says

Omar Ashour, a professor of security and military studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, says Benny Gantz during his visit to the US will likely ask for more military assistance to bolster Israel’s ammunition stockpiles. “If some sort of a truce happens or was successful, I think what we will see is a bit more of reconstruction of forces, repairing of some of the armoured vehicles and also rearming them to be much more effective in the next round,” Ashour told Al Jazeera. The visit by Gantz, who is expected to meet senior US administration officials, comes as US Vice President Harris called for an “immediate” pause in […]
