Afghanistan official shares government strategy against Taliban

Afghanistan’s interior minister has revealed to Al Jazeera the government’s plan to stop the Taliban. He said the government is throwing support behind local uprising movements and focusing on securing main highways, large cities and border crossings. Rwanda, Mozambique forces pursue rebels after port city recaptured

A joint force of troops from Mozambique and Rwanda which regained control of a strategic port from the armed group al-Shabab in the north says it is still pursuing the fighters in neighbouring areas. Mocimboa da Praia was a major rebel stronghold used by the group to launch attacks in other parts of the mineral and natural gas rich Cabo Delgado province. Algeria wildfire death toll rises as 25 soldiers killed

Algeria’s president has announced that 25 soldiers have been killed saving residents from the wildfires ravaging forests and villages east of the capital, adding to the fire death toll this week in the North African nation. The soldiers died during a rescue operation in the mountainous Kabylie region. The interior minister has suggested arsonists lit the fires, but so far has not provided further details. Rwandan forces have helped Mozambique’s army recapture the key northern port of Mocimboa da Praia from an armed group. Known locally as al-Shabab, the rebels used the port to launch a series of attacks across the oil and mineral-rich province of Cabo Delgado. Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in the past four years because of these attacks. China-Russia military drills: Exercises to focus on security in central Asia

China and Russia have begun a series of joint military drills in northeastern China that the two countries have described as a counterterrorism exercise. The five-day drills in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are taking place just weeks before the US is due to complete its military pullout from Afghanistan, which borders China. China is concerned that Afghanistan could again be a staging ground for al-Qaeda. Beijing and Moscow have drawn closer as their ties with the United States have deteriorated. Zambia election violence: President deploys army ahead of polls

Zambia has deployed soldiers to contain political violence which has broken out ahead of Thursday’s general elections. Several people have been killed in recent weeks. There are 16 presidential candidates – but the main contenders are the incumbent – President Edgar Lungu and opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema – a businessman who has already made several unsuccessful presidential runs. Five years ago Lungu narrowly defeated Hichilema. The opposition alleged vote rigging and there was unrest. Many here worry that history will repeat itself. Taliban captures three more Afghan provincial capitals in a day

The Taliban has captured three more provincial capitals, as they take their fight to the cities after seizing much of the countryside in recent months. The group has seized five provincial capitals in Afghanistan since Friday in a lightning offensive that appears to have overwhelmed government forces. Kunduz, Sar-e-Pol and Taloqan in the north fell within hours of each other on Sunday, the Taliban and officials in the cities confirmed.
