Palestinians strike against planned demolitions in East Jerusalem

Israeli authorities are stepping up demolitions in occupied East Jerusalem after the cabinet announced punitive measures against Palestinians early this week. Palestinians in Jabel Mukaber closed streets and poured oil on the roads to stop Israeli forces from razing their homes. At least fifteen Palestinians were injured during confrontations. Why is Pope Francis visiting DRC and South Sudan?

Pope Francis is visiting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan this week to deliver a message of peace and reconciliation to the two countries hit by the conflict. The pontiff will start his trip on Tuesday in the Congolese capital Kinshasa, where he will stay until Friday before heading to Juba, the capital of South Sudan. The six-day trip was originally planned for July 2022 but was postponed after Francis suffered problems with his knee, which have recently forced him to use a wheelchair. Blinken urges calm, reaffirms ‘ironclad’ US support for Israel

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for “calm” and “de-escalation” between Israelis and Palestinians while reiterating Washington’s “ironclad” commitment to Israel. One killed, two injured in Russian missile attack on Kyiv

One person has been killed and two were wounded in Kyiv as Russia launched more than a dozen missiles, says the capital’s mayor. 15 cruise missiles have reportedly been shot down by Ukrainian air defences. Tanzanian opposition leader and former presidential candidate Tundu Lissu returned home after more than two years in exile in Europe to a cheering crowd on Wednesday, after the government lifted a ban on political rallies. Afghanistan bitter winter: Severe cold kills more than 150 people

A wave of freezing temperatures is sweeping across much of Afghanistan. In roughly two weeks, more than 150 people have died. Most were those living in remote rural villages cut off by heavy snowfalls. It has thought to be the coldest winter Afghanistan has experienced in a decade – with temperatures as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius.
