Netanyahu cancels war cabinet meeting on Gaza

Israel’s war cabinet was due to meet to discuss a deal with Hamas – negotiated by the Americans, the Qataris and the Egyptians – about exchanging captives for Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails. That seems relatively uncontroversial – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told family members of the captives in a meeting on Thursday afternoon that negotiations are still ongoing. The second thing that was going to be discussed at the war cabinet was what Gaza would look like the day after the war. But Bezalel Smotrich, from Netanyahu’s coalition party, decided that he didn’t want that discussion to take place. He is very much against the Palestinian […]

Israeli army casualties: A major & a captain among latest soldiers killed in Gaza

A 22-year-old major in Israel’s 77th Battalion, a 24-year-old captain in the 52nd Battalion’s armoured brigade, and a 32-year-old deputy commander in the 198th Battalion were killed in fighting in south and central Gaza on Wednesday. The three seriously wounded received injuries in the same battles as the three deceased soldiers, Israel’s military said. The UN reports that 22 Israeli soldiers were killed over Tuesday and Wednesday in Gaza, bringing the total number of Israeli forces killed in the Palestinian territory to 162 since the ground invasion began two months ago. It was not known if the three latest deaths were included in the total death toll reported by the […]

Netanyahu in ‘extreme jeapordy’: Analysis

The ongoing Israel-Gaza war has destroyed Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s image as “Mr Security”, with many Israelis holding him responsible for the attacks, analyst Ahmed Helal has said. “The Israeli public is furious and they’re frustrated that their security apparatus let them down and then they are unable to kill the upper echelons of Hamas leadership like Yahya Sinwar [Hamas leader in Gaza],” Helal, Director of MENA region at Global Counsel, told Al Jazeera. “There are no clear wins in this war.” Helal said the lack of preparation for the Hamas offensive on October 7 has put Netanyahu in “extreme jeopardy”, potentially ruining his political career, and leaving him susceptible […]

The Houthi fighters launch a missile : Attack on a commercial vessel in the Red Sea

Houthi attacks on tankers passing through the narrow strait of Bab Al Mandab that connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea, have disrupted one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Houthis say they are targeting vessels linked to Israel in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. But countries in the region are worried the escalation is disrupting business and could drag them into a wider conflict. Israel’s Netanyahu heckled inside parliament by families of Hamas captives

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been heckled and booed by the families of captives held by Hamas in Gaza during an address to parliament. “Now! Now!” the families chanted from the gallery on Monday when Netanyahu promised to bring the captives home but added that he had been told by Israeli field commanders that “more time” was needed. Israel says 129 captives are still held in Gaza. Three of them were mistakenly killed by Israeli forces this month. Netanyahu’s address came after his Likud party reported that he visited the Gaza Strip on Monday and promised to ramp up Israel’s assault there. Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports from the […]

‘Israel preferring the war over releasing the hostages’: Analyst

Gideon Levy, a columnist for Israeli Haaretz newspaper, says the rise in Israeli soldiers’ death toll in Gaza has not made much of an impact on Israeli public opinion, the majority of which support continuing the war. “Thirteen soldiers [killed] is a hell of a price for Israel but 600 people in Gaza were killed this weekend,” Levy told Al Jazeera. Israeli army says 152 Israeli soldiers have so far been killed since the ground assault in Gaza began on October 27. Levy said he is “quite surprised” that pressure on Netanyahu has been “limited” so far. “There is pressure concerning only one issue – releasing the hostages. Everything else […]

UNSC resolution ‘greenlighting genocide’: Former UNRWA official

Chris Gunness says what’s unfolding in Gaza is “an American-Israeli genocide – it’s not just an Israeli genocide”. “Just as America provides Israel with $4bn of military support per annum, it’s also – as we’ve seen tonight – providing Israel with diplomatic and political cover to continue with a genocide which is marked by the wholesale and industrial ignoring of international humanitarian law,” Gunness told Al Jazeera. He added that Israeli statements following the passage of the Security Council resolution make it clear the country plans to retain control of what goes into Gaza. “It’s clear that [Israel] as it’s done in the past, [intends] to have a veto over […]
