A Hong-Kong based shipping company has suspended its activity to and from Israel. That’s after vessels in the Red Sea came under attack from Houthi fighters in Yemen. The Houthis say they’ll continue their attacks if Israel doesn’t stop its war on Gaza. And their activities are starting to have far-reaching consequences, not just for Israel, but globally. Al Jazeera’s Sara Khairat reports from the Israeli port city of Haifa. Maritime expert Victoria Mitchell says while recent attacks on ships in the Red Sea have not led to a complete shutdown of the trading route, there are implications for individual ship operators. “What is important to highlight is the concern […]

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock have issued a joint call for a “sustainable ceasefire” in Gaza. In an op-ed published in the Sunday Times on Sunday, Cameron and Baerbock said that “too many civilians have been killed” in Gaza and the war “cannot drag on and on”. “Israel has the right to defend itself but, in doing so, it must abide by international humanitarian law,” Cameron and Baerbock said. “Israel will not win this war if its operations destroy the prospect of peaceful co-existence with Palestinians. They have a right to eliminate the threat posed by Hamas. But too many civilians have been killed.” […]

Three Israeli hostages killed mistakenly in Gaza by Israeli forces were shirtless and one of them was holding up a white flag, according to an initial inquiry into the incident, a military official has said. The incident took place in an area of intense combat where Hamas fighters operate in civilian attire and use deception tactics, the Israeli official said on Saturday. Israel’s Prime Minister has once again vowed that the military campaign in Gaza will not stop until Hamas is defeated. Benjamin Netanyahu was speaking after a war cabinet meeting was held following the Israeli military’s admission that its soldiers broke rules of engagement when they shot dead three […]
A relatively new word in the lexicon of war is ‘domicide.’ It describes the destruction of houses, and other buildings, making the area where they once stood no longer habitable. And the UN says that’s what’s happening in Gaza. Al Jazeera’s Imogen Kimber reports. University of Maryland professor Shibley Telhami says US President Joe Biden is making his decisions on Palestine and Israel “based on personal beliefs, personal preferences, personal emotions,” and “not necessarily driven by a considered assessment of American interests at stake”. Telhami tells host Steve Clemons that Biden’s “inability to show empathy” for the Palestinians is shocking, and that the president’s recent warnings to Israel were driven in part by his calculations for next year’s election. All the talk about plans for “the day after” the war are distractions from the real-time death and destruction in Gaza, Telhami says. The US is taking increasingly assertive steps in trying to limit settler violence. First, the demand was made for Israel to control “extremist” violence. Following that, a visa ban was imposed last week on some individuals linked to this violence. Now, the shipment of 27,000 military-style rifles, initially destined for the Israeli national police, has been temporarily halted by the Biden administration. There are concerns that these weapons could end up in the hands of settlers. Notably, the pause comes after the shipment had already cleared the initial congressional review and passed the committee stage. Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro has the latest from Washington, DC.
