Antonio Guterres says he was left “shocked” by the “misrepresentations” of his remarks regarding Hamas made on Tuesday during a meeting of the UN Security Council. “I am shocked by the misrepresentations by some of my statement … as if I was justifying acts of terror by Hamas. This is false. It was the opposite,” the UN chief told reporters. “I believe it’s necessary to set the record straight – especially out of respect for the victims and their families.” For in depth analysis, Mahjoob Zweiri is a Professor of Contemporary Middle East Politics at Qatar University. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has renewed his demand for a ceasefire in Gaza and said that international law was being violated in the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas. Israel has bombarded the besieged Gaza Strip relentlessly since October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killling at least 1,400 people according to Israeli authorities. Speaking before the 15-member UN Security Council on Tuesday, Guterres pleaded for civilians to be protected and warned that the fighting risked a wider conflagration in the region. Guterres also criticised Israel without naming it, saying, “protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than one million people to […]
As expected, a Russian-drafted Security Council resolution has failed to gather the required minimum of nine votes in the UN after the US-led opposition towards it for being insufficiently critical of Hamas. The draft called for a humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as well as the release of captives held in Gaza and the safe evacuation of civilians. The US accused Russia of giving “cover” to Hamas after the group was not mentioned in the resolution. The US is continuing to urge Israel to minimise the risk of civilian casualties, according to an envoy. Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from the United Nations headquarters in New York. The United Nations Security Council has been meeting behind closed doors on the war between Israel and Gaza. Russia and Brazil have both put forward draft resolutions to deal with the crisis. The Russian draft resolution that was circulated during a two-and-a-half-hour closed-door UN Security Council meeting is really the first draft by any of the Security Council members since this conflict began. The Brazilian draft resolution strongly condemns Hamas and its attack last Saturday, while urging Israel to rescind its order for Palestinian civilians to evacuate from northern Gaza. It comes as the UN Secretary-General says the conflict has reached a ‘dangerous new low’. Al Jazeera’s Shihab Rattansi reports […]

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution proposed by the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu to seek an opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on what legal obligations nations are under to protect climate systems and people affected by climate change. Co-sponsored by 132 countries at the UN, the resolution was adopted on Wednesday by a consensus. The UN is now empowered to seek the ICJ’s opinion on what countries’ legal obligations are to protect current and future generations from climate change. The court’s opinion will be non-binding but could help in future climate negotiations and lawsuits. Al Jazeera’s James Bays reports from the United […]
Burkina Faso’s army has announced it has deposed President Roch Kabore, dissolved the government and the national assembly, and suspended the constitution, seizing control of the country after two days of unrest at army camps in the capital. The announcement, signed on Monday by Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba and read by another officer on state television, said the takeover had been carried out without violence and those detained were in a secure location. The country’s borders have also been closed, it added. Before the army statement, the African Union and the West African bloc ECOWAS both condemned what they called an attempted coup, saying they held the military responsible […]
