Thousands of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been on the move, fleeing for safety after seeing soldiers retreating. The conflict between the military and the M23 fighters is moving closer to Goma, the regional capital of North Kivu province. The DRC government has repeatedly accused Rwanda of backing the rebels, an allegation it denies. In Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), thousands of people have been forced from their homes because of fighting between the army and the rebel group known as M23. On Tuesday, an army position was attacked in Rutshuru, north of the city of Goma. M23 is widely believed to be backed by Rwanda and is one of more than 120 armed groups operating in eastern DRC. A volcanic eruption near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced thousands of people to flee for safety. At least five people died in a car crash in the panic. Neighbouring Rwanda has opened its border to let in those fleeing the eruption. Initially, scientists said the lava flow was heading away from Goma, but now they’ve warned that new fractures have put two million residents at risk.
