A volcanic eruption near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced thousands of people to flee for safety.
At least five people died in a car crash in the panic.
Neighbouring Rwanda has opened its border to let in those fleeing the eruption.
Initially, scientists said the lava flow was heading away from Goma, but now they’ve warned that new fractures have put two million residents at risk.

Yeah, it is.
No it’s a strato volcano, they have fast pyroclastic flows but slow flowing lava. Shield volcanoes have the fasted flowing lava as it has low viscosity.

Nyiragongo has a unique lava flow. It had a very low silica content, lower than lava at Kilauea and because of that and the fact that the volcano is a stratovolcano, the lava can travel really fast.

Be cheaper in the long run to send some jets in as a possible solution to blowing the side out you want the flow going in, rather than re building infrastructure and cleaning up the millions of tons of rock.
Some pre planning may have been able to go in years ago given it’s a known risk.
