Several members of the United Nations Security Council have on Monday condemned Russia’s moves to escalate its crisis with Ukraine. The UNSC held an emergency meeting after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine and deployed Russian troops to them, for what he described as a peacekeeping operation, in defiance of international law. Ukrainian government soldiers in front-line trenches in Ukraine’s east said on Monday that heavy shelling from Russian-backed separatists had intensified to provoke all-out conflict amid fears of Russia seeking a pretext for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian troops have battled Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk breakaway regions bordering Russia since 2014. A ceasefire deal in 2015 halted the worst fighting, but shelling has intensified along the “line of contact” since last week as Russia masses forces along Ukraine’s borders. In the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic, a breakaway region of eastern Ukraine, little has changed since the fighting broke out in 2014. Most of the people who used to live there are too scared to return because of sporadic shelling and because fears are growing about potential renewed conflict. But the young generation, many of whom were children when the conflict started, seem determined to live their lives as normally as they can. The United States has accused Russia of planning a so-called “false flag” operation in eastern Ukraine, in an attempt to create an excuse for an invasion. The Pentagon says there is evidence Russian agents might already be in the country to carry out acts of sabotage and blame Ukraine for them. A Kremlin spokesman has dismissed the reports as “unfounded”.
