Saudi Arabia has announced a plan to offer its rivals in Yemen’s long-running war a nationwide ceasefire under the auspices of the United Nations, the kingdom’s foreign minister said. Saudi officials say they intercepted the drone and missile attacks and the damage was minimal. But the Houthis claim the destruction was substantial. Saudi Arabia said it has intercepted and thwarted several aerial assaults by Houthi rebels in Yemen targeting the capital Riyadh and other southern cities. The attack came as Houthi rebels push forward in the northern Yemeni province of Marib. They launched an offensive against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government there in early February. Saturday was the most violent day yet. The Yemeni government has issued urgent calls for the Houthis to stop their offensive. They have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe. A series of air raids in northern Yemen by the Saudi-led coalition has killed at least 31 civilians. The attacks brought a rebuke from the UN humanitarian chief for Yemen, who called it “shocking”. The raids took place after Saudi Arabia confirmed one of its planes had crashed in the same region. Houthi rebels claim to have shot the plane down.
