Claudia Sheinbaum elected Mexico’s first female president

Claudia Sheinbaum is projected to win the poll by a landslide. She’s a former climate scientist and mayor of Mexico City. She’s set to succeed her political mentor, the outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Supporters of the president-elect gathered in their numbers in the capital to celebrate Sheinbaum’s landslide victory. The official quick count from the INE has projected Claudia Sheinbaum as the winner of Sunday’s presidential election with between 58.3 and 60.7 percent of the vote. Governments across Latin America have rallied around Mexico after security forces in Ecuador stormed the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest a controversial politician who had been granted political asylum there. Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela sharply rebuked Ecuador on Saturday, hours after the seizure of Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas, with Nicaragua joining Mexico in severing diplomatic ties with Quito. Mexico investigating soldiers involved in ‘execution’ of five men

Mexican prosecutors are investigating what President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called the “execution” of five men in an incident that has sparked outrage from human rights observers. Media outlets released a video on Tuesday, appearing to show a group of soldiers pulling the men from a crashed pick-up truck in Nuevo Laredo, a border city in the state of Tamaulipas.
