Purdue Pharma introduced the opioid painkiller OxyContin in the 1990s and promoted it aggressively as non-addictive. United States government lawyers argued that the company’s owners, the Sacklers, knew how their medication was being abused widely, but doubled down on production – and profits. Recently a lawsuit was settled for $6bn. Barry Meier, the author of Pain Killer (soon to be a Netflix series), started writing about the opioid epidemic 20 years ago when it was killing about 20,000 people yearly. Media outlets released a video on Tuesday, appearing to show a group of soldiers pulling the men from a crashed pick-up truck in Nuevo Laredo, a border city in the state of Tamaulipas. The soldiers then beat the occupants before lining them up against a wall and shooting them. “Apparently this was an execution, and that cannot be permitted,” Lopez Obrador said at a daily press briefing on Wednesday. “Those responsible are about to be turned over to the appropriate authorities.” Al Jazeera’s […]
Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of a “barbaric act” in his first public comments on the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam, which has caused widespread flooding. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has accused Moscow of destroying the Russian-held dam, said Russia-backed forces were failing in their efforts to evacuate residents.
