The Israeli forces have stormed the largest medical facility in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Nasser hospital has been under siege for weeks. These are scenes moments after it was shelled overnight. Israeli soldiers then launched their raid, forcing everyone out, including patients in intensive care and families sheltering from Israeli attacks. Israel has issued a statement saying it is conducting a “precise and limited” raid on Nasser Hospital. Without providing evidence, it added that the decision to storm the compound was based on information that Hamas fighters were hiding and had kept captives in the facility. The overall toll is the highest since 2015 and an increase of nearly 44 percent on 2022’s figures. “In December 2023, CPJ reported that more journalists were killed in the first three months of the Israel-Gaza war than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year,” it said. Satellite images taken between November 22 last year and January 15 this year and verified by Al Jazeera, show that the Egyptian authorities have been tightening the border security by the Gaza Strip by establishing several checkpoints. On November 23, the Egyptian authorities began to complete the construction of an old earthen berm parallel to the border, approximately 200 metres (219 yards) away from the separating border fence. Pictures taken on December 3 show that the authorities had completed the remaining part of the berm, 3.5km (2.2 miles) long, bringing the total length of the berm to 14km (8.7 miles) along the entire sector border. Pictures from November 22 also […]

Muhhamed Nazzal, a senior member of Hamas’s political bureau, outlined the group’s counterproposal to a draft truce deal worked on by Qatar, Egypt, Israel, and the United States. “The proposal was received by Hamas following the Paris conference and Hamas’s response was more specific and provided deadlines. These timelines were specified by Hamas itself,” Nazzal told Al Jazeera. “Among these details, none can be compromised. The Israeli killing machine must be brought to a halt. We wish to see Israeli occupation forces withdrawal from the Gaza Strip entirely. Our response is realistic and our demands are reasonable.” He said Hamas fears the Israelis are “not seriously committed to this deal”, […]

Gaza’s high costs and low income make diapers a luxury. 1.7 million displaced Palestinians face dire sanitation issues and Hepatitis A. With prices around $1 per diaper change, many parents are forced to find alternatives, such as pieces of cloth, due to unemployment and the high cost of living. The situation is worsened by the lack of aid and basic hygiene products, making survival the main priority for the people of Gaza. The United Nations estimates that displaced Palestinians face a ticking health time bomb, with one shower for 2,000 people and around 500 people sharing a single toilet. With Israeli attacks intensifying and more people forced to move, the […]
