Little appetite in the region for normalisation talks until war comes to an end Mahjoob Zweiri, a Middle East analyst at Qatar University, has said that there is “some hope” from the largely positive response from Hamas towards a potential truce, and added that talk of further normalisation with Israel would re-main largely unpopular as long as the war in Gaza continues. “No one is ready to listen to this at the moment, without stopping the war on Gaza,” Zweiri told Al Jazeera, adding that Israeli-Saudi normalisation would be a victory for both Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and the administration of US President Joe Biden as their approaches to the […]
Gaza’s high costs and low income make diapers a luxury. 1.7 million displaced Palestinians face dire sanitation issues and Hepatitis A. With prices around $1 per diaper change, many parents are forced to find alternatives, such as pieces of cloth, due to unemployment and the high cost of living. The situation is worsened by the lack of aid and basic hygiene products, making survival the main priority for the people of Gaza. The United Nations estimates that displaced Palestinians face a ticking health time bomb, with one shower for 2,000 people and around 500 people sharing a single toilet. With Israeli attacks intensifying and more people forced to move, the […]
Many Palestinians forced to flee Israel’s attacks on Gaza have been left with nothing. Displaced and living in camps, they still find ways to provide for their loved ones. For one family, that means making and selling pizzas from a makeshift tent on the side of the street. Israel has unleashed unlawful lethal force against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, carrying out unlawful killings and displaying “a chilling disregard for Palestinian lives”, Amnesty International says. The human rights organisation said in a report released on Monday that Israel’s actions in the territory have intensified during its war on Gaza and its military and other bodies are committing numerous illegal acts of violence that amount to clear violations of international law. Budour Hassan is a Researcher on Israel and Palestine at Amnesty International. She’s one of the authors of that new report, and she joins us live from Ramallah – in the occupied West Bank to discuss this. […]
The Arab bloc in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, is due to table a vote of no-confidence, in the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It says his handling of the war on Gaza is making it difficult to reach a deal on the release of captives and an end to the violence. People trying to get out of Gaza via the Rafah border crossing with Egypt are being forced to pay thousands of dollars to a network of so-called brokers for exit permits. That’s according to reports published by Le Monde in France. Some Palestinians describe the practice as state-sponsored corruption and are pointing to Israel and Egypt, which control the crossing. Palestinians fleeing the fighting in Khan Younis are making their way further south. Most of Gaza’s population is crammed into an area at the southernmost tip of the Gaza Strip. Trapped between the sea and the Egyptian border, they have nowhere else to go. Many are living on the streets with little or no access to food, water, medicines or appropriate shelter. The Israeli military says its ground forces have “encircled” the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip after 24 of its soldiers were killed in the enclave in its largest single-day toll in the three-month war. “Over the past day, troops carried out an extensive operation during which they encircled Khan Younis and deepened the operation in the area,” the military said in a statement on Tuesday, calling the city a stronghold of the Palestinian armed group Hamas. The Palestinian Red Crescent says Israeli forces have shelled its headquarters. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reports from Rafah in southern Gaza. Israel has decided to release a part of the funds it owes to the Palestinian Authority (PA). It’s part of taxes that Israel collects on their behalf. But the money meant for Gaza will be held in Norway instead of the PA. Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim reports from the occupied West Bank.
