The Scottish Parliament is due to debate a motion in support of UN calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the creation of safe routes for medical aid and displaced people. In an interview with Al Jazeera, the Scottish first minister said he had been calling for a ceasefire in the besieged coastal enclave for weeks. “I expect the Scottish Parliament to vote overwhelmingly for a motion calling for an immediate ceasefire, but we must also address the real reasons for this [conflict], which is that the Palestinians were promised a state but this promise was reneged on,” Yousaf said. “There has to be a recognition of the State of […]
“I thought of my mother in the midst of the high number of random airstrikes.” On day 22 of the war on Gaza, Cameraman Ibrahim Al-Otla filmed with the Gaza Civil Defence under intense Israeli bombardment. Racing injured people to hospitals, dodging bombs, digging children out of the rubble – and then heading back out to do it all again, bomb after bomb, the first responders and Ibrahim knew that every mission could be their last. This is a tribute to Ibrahim as he risked his life to show the harsh realities on the ground. Mukesh Kapila, a former UN humanitarian agency coordinator, says he has spent 30 years working in numerous conflicts around the world but describes Israel’s ongoing attack on Gaza as “unique”. He says that is because the most modern weapons are being used in one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. Kapila also denounced Israel’s repeated attacks on emergency services workers and overwhelmed medical facilities. “What we’re seeing now is that all rules have broken down and there are no norms because this is a war on a whole society. There are really no rules at all. What we need to happen, therefore, is a rescue from outside,” […]
Caroline Gennez, the Belgian minister of development cooperation and major cities, says her government is considering the recognition of the state of Palestine. Speaking to Al Jazeera, she said this was necessary for achieving peace in the long term. Gennez also called on the Israeli government to the Beit Hanoon border crossing, called Erez by Israel, and the Karem Abu Salem crossing, called Kerem Shalom by Israel, with Gaza to allow in more humanitarian aid. “On a usual day before October 7, there were 500 trucks necessary to supply what [people in Gaza] need,” she said, noting that “only 600 trucks” have come in through the Rafah crossing with Egypt […]
In an interview with Al Jazeera, a Spanish minister has called on the international community to sanction Israel, which she accused of a “planned genocide” of Palestinians in Gaza. Ione Belarra, the Spanish minister for social rights and leader of the far-left Podemos party, also condemned world leaders for an apparent double standard – saying while human rights abuses in Ukraine have been decried, there is a “deafening silence” on the victims of Israeli bombardment. “The Israeli state must end this planned genocide against the Palestine people,” Belarra said on Wednesday. US media is reporting that President Joe Biden has asked the Israeli prime minister to agree to a three-day pause in fighting. That’s to allow for the release of Israeli captives. While the White House is not confirming those reports, US officials are publicly disagreeing with Israel more than they have since the war on Gaza began. Since Israel began its bombardment of Gaza, 9 countries have withdrawn their ambassadors or severed ties. They’ve called for an immediate ceasefire and for humanitarian aid to enter the strip unhindered. NATO member Turkey is among those that pulled their ambassador out. So did Israel’s neighbour, Jordan, that said Israel is committing “war crimes”. The latest to join the list are South Africa and Chad. Bolivia was the first to sever ties entirely with Israel – saying its decision was a “condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip”. Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports from the Occupied East Jerusalem. For in depth analysis, […]
