Mediators are calling on Sudan’s warring sides to extend a week-long humanitarian truce

The fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces hasn’t stopped. Dozens of breaches were reported during the past week. More than 860 civilians have been killed. Humanitarian agencies say there MUST be a pause in fighting, to let aid reach those who desperately need it. The UN warns half of Sudan’s population needs humanitarian assistance. Sudan’s Burhan sacks RSF head Hemedti as deputy of sovereign council

The head of Sudan’s ruling sovereign council has fired the leader of the Rapid Support Forces as his deputy. The leader of the army, Abdel Fattah al Burhan, signed a decree on Friday to sack Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, from the transitional council with immediate effect. Millions have been caught in the bitter power struggle between the two warring generals. Heavy fighting has continued in the capital and in Darfur. Sudan’s warring parties have met for direct talks in Saudi Arabia as mediators pressed for an end to a conflict that has killed hundreds and sent tens of thousands fleeing. Clashes rock Sudan ceasefire as UN official seeks aid protection

Sudanese struggle to get basic commodities amid conflict

Taking advantage of relative calm, many residents in Khartoum and the neighbouring city of Omdurman emerged from their homes to seek food and water, queueing at bakeries and grocery stores, after days of being trapped inside by the fighting between the army and the rapid support forces. Some inspected shops or homes that had been destroyed or looted. Gunfire and loud explosions could be heard in the city, though residents said clashes were in more limited pockets, mainly around the military’s headquarters and the Republican Palace in central Khartoum and around bases in Omdurman across the Nile River.
