Hamas: No counterproposal details can be ‘compromised’

Muhhamed Nazzal, a senior member of Hamas’s political bureau, outlined the group’s counterproposal to a draft truce deal worked on by Qatar, Egypt, Israel, and the United States. “The proposal was received by Hamas following the Paris conference and Hamas’s response was more specific and provided deadlines. These timelines were specified by Hamas itself,” Nazzal told Al Jazeera. “Among these details, none can be compromised. The Israeli killing machine must be brought to a halt. We wish to see Israeli occupation forces withdrawal from the Gaza Strip entirely. Our response is realistic and our demands are reasonable.” He said Hamas fears the Israelis are “not seriously committed to this deal”, […]

War on Gaza: Diaper prices soar as parents struggle to afford basic necessities

Gaza’s high costs and low income make diapers a luxury. 1.7 million displaced Palestinians face dire sanitation issues and Hepatitis A. With prices around $1 per diaper change, many parents are forced to find alternatives, such as pieces of cloth, due to unemployment and the high cost of living. The situation is worsened by the lack of aid and basic hygiene products, making survival the main priority for the people of Gaza. The United Nations estimates that displaced Palestinians face a ticking health time bomb, with one shower for 2,000 people and around 500 people sharing a single toilet. With Israeli attacks intensifying and more people forced to move, the […]

Israel’s ‘chilling disregard’ for life in occupied West Bank: Amnesty

Israel has unleashed unlawful lethal force against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, carrying out unlawful killings and displaying “a chilling disregard for Palestinian lives”, Amnesty International says. The human rights organisation said in a report released on Monday that Israel’s actions in the territory have intensified during its war on Gaza and its military and other bodies are committing numerous illegal acts of violence that amount to clear violations of international law. Budour Hassan is a Researcher on Israel and Palestine at Amnesty International. She’s one of the authors of that new report, and she joins us live from Ramallah – in the occupied West Bank to discuss this. […]

Israeli war cabinet meeting ends with seemingly little consensus on next steps

In tonight’s meeting, there didn’t seem to be any sort of consensus about what the next steps are when it comes to any framework or deal regarding the release of Israeli captives from Gaza. The Israeli side is hesitant to make significant concessions, particularly regarding the release of thousands of Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails. This highlights the deep political divide across the landscape in Israel, indicating there is a long way to go in finding common ground. Tonight’s war cabinet meeting followed a broader Israeli cabinet gathering where coalition members, including those from Netanyahu’s Likud party, expressed frustrations. There’s mounting pressure from the right-wing faction of the government, threatening […]
