Taliban says Afghanistan war over as president flees

The Taliban has declared the war in Afghanistan over after its fighters swept into the capital, Kabul, and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. As American forces continue to evacuate diplomats and Afghan partners through Kabul airport, the armed group has taken control of the now-abandoned presidential palace. Taliban capture Afghanistan’s Jalalabad, cut off Kabul from east

The Taliban have taken control of Jalalabad, capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, early on Sunday morning without a fight, according to officials and a resident. This effectively leaves the capital Kabul as the last major urban area under government control – it follows the Taliban’s seizure of the major northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The collapse of the eastern city would mean another major setback for President Ashraf Ghani’s government and will put the Taliban effectively in control of most of the country. Afghanistan official shares government strategy against Taliban

Algeria wildfire death toll rises as 25 soldiers killed

Algeria’s president has announced that 25 soldiers have been killed saving residents from the wildfires ravaging forests and villages east of the capital, adding to the fire death toll this week in the North African nation. The soldiers died during a rescue operation in the mountainous Kabylie region. The interior minister has suggested arsonists lit the fires, but so far has not provided further details.
