Dozens of young girls have been buried at a desolate hilltop cemetery in Kabul, a day after a secondary school was targeted in the bloodiest attack in Afghanistan in more than a year. The attack happened in Dasht-e-Barchi, a west Kabul suburb populated mostly by Hazara Shia, just as pupils were leaving at the end of the day. Witnesses said it appeared well-coordinated and intended to kill as many children as possible. The commander of foreign military forces in Afghanistan, US Army General Scott Miller, says says “local action” has begun as part of the final withdrawal of US and NATO troops. Heavy fighting is continuing in Afghanistan’s southwestern province of Helmand between Taliban fighters and government troops.
