Afghans hold funeral for victims of Kabul school bomb blasts

Dozens of young girls have been buried at a desolate hilltop cemetery in Kabul, a day after a secondary school was targeted in the bloodiest attack in Afghanistan in more than a year. The attack happened in Dasht-e-Barchi, a west Kabul suburb populated mostly by Hazara Shia, just as pupils were leaving at the end of the day. Witnesses said it appeared well-coordinated and intended to kill as many children as possible. US commander in Afghanistan says steps for withdrawal have begun

The commander of foreign military forces in Afghanistan, US Army General Scott Miller, says says “local action” has begun as part of the final withdrawal of US and NATO troops. Miller said foreign military bases would be gradually handed over to Afghan forces. US President Joe Biden wants all combat soldiers out by September 11, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York City and Washington, DC. Thousands flee amid fighting between Taliban and Afghan forces

Heavy fighting is continuing in Afghanistan’s southwestern province of Helmand between Taliban fighters and government troops. Violence escalated on Sunday, despite continuing peace negotiations in Qatar that started more than a month ago. More than 30,000 people have since fled to the provincial capital of Lashkar Gar.
